At least 36 Amarnath Yatra pilgrims sustained minor injuries after a multi-vehicle collision involving four to five buses in the Pahalgam-bound convoy near the Chanderkote langar site in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district on July 5, 2025.

The accident, reportedly caused by brake failure in the last bus of the convoy, led to a chain collision during a breakfast stop. Rescue operations were launched immediately, with all injured shifted to District Hospital Ramban. Most have been discharged after first aid, and replacement buses were arranged to ensure the yatra continued without further disruption.

Chain Collision Disrupts Pilgrimage

The incident occurred early Saturday morning when the last bus in the convoy lost control due to suspected brake failure and rammed into stationary vehicles, resulting in a pile-up that damaged four to five buses.

“Due to brake failure, four vehicles collided with each other, at least 20-25 yatris are injured. Most of the injuries are minor, and all the affected yatris are being discharged after receiving first aid,” said Deputy Commissioner Ramban, Ilyas Khan.

Medical teams and police responded promptly, and the injured were quickly transported to hospital for treatment. Authorities ensured that the remaining pilgrims were transferred to other buses to continue their journey towards the Pahalgam base camp.

Safety Measures and Ongoing Yatra

The annual Amarnath Yatra draws thousands of devotees, with the current batch including nearly 7,000 pilgrims travelling in over 300 vehicle4. In light of recent accidents and security concerns, the administration has set up medical camps and mini-hospitals along the route and deployed backup ambulances.

Officials have reiterated the importance of convoy travel and adherence to safety protocols, especially on the challenging Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. An investigation into the exact cause of the accident is underway, and authorities have assured that all possible measures are being taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This accident underscores the persistent logistical and safety challenges faced during large-scale pilgrimages like the Amarnath Yatra. While the swift response by authorities is commendable, the incident highlights the need for rigorous vehicle checks, improved driver training, and robust emergency preparedness.
