Jaipur Food Safety Department destroyed 1.5 lakh kg expired Amul products after uncovering distributor tampering dates using chemicals and YouTube tricks.

The Rajasthan Food Safety Department has averted a potential public health catastrophe by seizing and destroying over 1.5 lakh kilograms of expired Amul food products in Jaipur. Acting on a critical tip-off from the state’s 181 helpline, a team led by the Chief Medical Health Officer (CMHO) Jaipur-II raided a warehouse in the Kho Nagorian area belonging to M/s Athlete Distributor.

The firm had reportedly purchased near-expiry non-dairy items including noodles, ketchup, mayonnaise, and energy drinks at “throwaway prices” with the intent to flood the market with them.

To facilitate this fraud, the distributor was caught using chemicals like thinner and acetone to erase original expiry dates and reprint fresh ones. All seized products were transported in 27 trucks over a span of four days and destroyed at a garbage dump at the firm’s expense to ensure they never reach unsuspecting dinner tables.

Jaipur Raid Uncovers Expired Amul Food Scheme

The scale of the deception uncovered during the raid was staggering, exposing a calculated attempt to risk lives for margins. Investigators found approximately 12,000 cartons of expired goods, with dates already erased from nearly 3,000 of them.

The distributor was not just erasing dates; they were prepared for a full-scale rebranding of the expired stock. Officials recovered 4,500 new Amul-branded cartons designed to repackage the tampered goods, making them indistinguishable from fresh stock.

“The team was stunned to see such a large quantity of expired food,” stated Bhagwat Singh, Additional Commissioner of Food Safety. In a chilling admission during questioning, the firm’s operator, Gagan Ahuja, reportedly confessed to learning these illegal date-altering techniques through YouTube tutorials, demonstrating how digital accessibility can be weaponised by unscrupulous actors.

Systemic Lapses and Legal Consequences

Beyond the immediate fraud, the investigation revealed significant systemic failures in oversight. The warehouse, which neighbours claimed remained locked from the outside all day while 10-12 workers toiled within, was found to be operating with an already expired food license.

Representatives from the manufacturing and supply firms Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union and Advansys India Private Limited were summoned to the site and confirmed the products were authentic but clearly tampered with. They admitted the distributor had been buying near-expiry products at deep discounts.

Consequently, the Food Safety Department has issued notices to both firms under the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), 2006, and is filing a formal court complaint. This massive crackdown, valued at roughly ₹6 crore, marks a pivotal moment in Rajasthan’s “Pure for Sure” campaign, aimed at sanitising the supply chain from such predatory practices.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, we believe that food safety is not a luxury but a fundamental human right that directly impacts the dignity and health of every citizen. It is deeply disturbing that a distributor could exploit the trust associated with a household brand like Amul to orchestrate a scam of this magnitude.

This incident highlights a dark irony of our digital age: while the state uses helplines like ‘181’ to empower citizens, criminals are using platforms like YouTube to perfect the art of deception.
