A police head constable was killed after suspected terrorists opened fire on a police party at Lal Chowk in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, in the latest terror attack to hit the Valley. The officer, identified as Head Constable Ashiq Hussain, was on duty as part of the security deployment for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra when the attack took place.
He was rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag but succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Security forces immediately cordoned off the area and launched a massive search operation to trace the attackers. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha condemned the attack, describing it as a “cowardly act of terror” and assured that those responsible would be brought to justice. Police officials said investigations are underway, while security has been intensified across the district.
Officer Dies
According to officials, the incident occurred at Lal Chowk in Anantnag on Wednesday afternoon when suspected terrorists opened fire on a police party stationed in the area. Head Constable Ashiq Hussain sustained critical gunshot injuries and was immediately evacuated to the Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag. Despite medical intervention, doctors were unable to save him.
Following the attack, the area was swiftly sealed off as personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Indian Army and other security agencies launched a coordinated cordon-and-search operation to track down those responsible. Additional checkpoints were set up across the district, and surveillance was stepped up as part of heightened security measures.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed grief over the officer’s death and extended his condolences to the bereaved family. In a statement, he said the sacrifice of the slain policeman would not be forgotten and that the perpetrators of the attack would face the full force of the law. The Lieutenant Governor also said he had spoken to Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat to review the security situation and directed officials to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident.
Police officials have not yet disclosed the identities of the attackers or the exact sequence of events leading up to the firing. Investigators are examining evidence from the scene while search operations continue in and around Anantnag.
Attack Comes
The attack comes at a time when security across Jammu and Kashmir has been significantly strengthened due to the ongoing annual Amarnath Yatra, one of the country’s largest religious pilgrimages. Thousands of police personnel and security forces have been deployed across the Union Territory to safeguard pilgrims, maintain public order and prevent militant attacks.
Head Constable Ashiq Hussain was among the officers assigned to this security deployment when he was targeted. The incident has once again highlighted the persistent security challenges faced by personnel operating in the region despite extensive preventive measures.
While officials are continuing their investigation, reports citing security agencies said a social media post attributed the attack to The Resistance Front (TRF), a group believed to be linked to the banned terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba. Authorities, however, have not officially confirmed the claim and said all aspects of the case are being verified before any conclusions are drawn.
The killing follows a series of security operations and sporadic militant incidents reported in Jammu and Kashmir over recent months. Security agencies have intensified anti-terror operations across vulnerable districts while continuing efforts to ensure that civilian life and the Amarnath Yatra proceed without disruption.
