Iranian Defence Minister Amir Nasirzadeh Killed in Israeli Attack: Reports

Following the reported deaths of senior military leaders in coordinated airstrikes, Iran has launched retaliatory missile attacks across the Middle East, pushing the region toward a full-scale international conflict.

In a major escalation of Middle East hostilities, Iran’s Defence Minister Amir Nasirzadeh and Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) commander Mohammad Pakpour are believed to have been killed during coordinated airstrikes on Saturday, February 28, 2026.

Sources cited by Reuters confirmed that the officials were targeted in a massive joint offensive by Israel and the United States, codenamed “Operation Roaring Lion” and “Operation Epic Fury.” The strikes, which hit several cities including Tehran and Isfahan, have prompted immediate retaliatory missile launches from Iran against U.S. and Israeli assets in the Persian Gulf, plunging the region into a state of “total war.”

A Strike At The Heart Of Power

The precision strikes targeted high-security zones where senior Iranian officials had reportedly gathered. U.S. President Donald Trump described the mission as a “major operation” to thoroughly degrade military capabilities and eliminate existential threats.

In a harrowing development, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi condemned the strikes, specifically citing an attack on a girls’ primary school in southern Iran that reportedly killed at least 40 children. “These crimes against the Iranian people will not go unanswered,” Araghchi stated via social media, as state-run IRNA news reported that rescue efforts are ongoing amidst the rubble.

Escalation Following Failed Diplomacy

These events mark a violent peak in a long-standing “shadow war,” following a 12-day air conflict in June 2025 and months of tension over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The sudden offensive has effectively shuttered all regional diplomatic channels and led to the immediate closure of airspace across the Middle East, causing global travel chaos.

As of Saturday evening, the status of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei remains a subject of intense speculation, with some Israeli media outlets claiming he was a target, while Iranian officials maintain that the leadership remains resilient despite the “unlawful” aggression.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, we believe that violence is a self-perpetuating cycle that offers no winners, only victims. The reported deaths of military leaders and the tragic, senseless loss of school children represent a catastrophic failure of international diplomacy. Targeted killings and “preemptive” strikes rarely lead to lasting stability; instead, they often dismantle the very structures needed for negotiation, leaving behind a vacuum of grief and extremism.

We stand firmly for the sanctity of human life and urge global leaders to choose the difficult, necessary path of dialogue over the destructive ease of missiles. True security is built on mutual respect and the preservation of peace, not the elimination of adversaries.

How can the international community move beyond military retaliation to ensure that civilians are never the collateral damage of political conflict?
