Iranian state media has clarified that the wife of late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is alive, dismissing earlier reports that she had died in the February 28 strike in Tehran allegedly carried out by the United States and Israel. The clarification, reported by Reuters and other international media outlets, came hours after Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei issued his first public statement addressing the ongoing conflict and confirming his father’s death. Mojtaba said he personally saw his father’s body after the strike and described him as “a mountain of steadfastness.”
While denying reports of his mother’s death, the new leader confirmed that several family members including his wife, one of his sisters, a niece and the husband of another sister were killed in the attack. The strike, which reportedly targeted a leadership compound in Tehran, has intensified tensions across the Middle East and raised concerns about further escalation between Iran and its adversaries.
Leadership Confirms Losses After Targeted Strike
In his first public address since the strike and his emergence as Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei spoke about the emotional and political impact of the attack that killed his father. He said he had the “honour of seeing his body after his martyrdom,” portraying Ali Khamenei as a figure who symbolised endurance and resistance.
Iranian state media later issued a clarification dismissing earlier reports that Khamenei’s wife, widely reported to be Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, had also died in the strike. The correction came after widespread speculation circulated online and in some media reports following the attack.
However, Mojtaba confirmed that the strike did result in multiple family casualties, including his wife and other close relatives. His remarks marked one of the most direct confirmations from Iran’s leadership about the human toll of the attack.
Officials have also suggested that Mojtaba himself may have been injured during the strike, though he has continued to appear in public statements and communications since then. The incident has deeply shaken Iran’s political establishment, given Ali Khamenei’s central role in shaping the country’s ideological and political direction for more than three decades.
How The Operation Unfolded
According to multiple international reports citing officials familiar with the operation, the strike that killed Ali Khamenei was the result of months of intelligence gathering and surveillance. Intelligence agencies from the United States and Israel reportedly tracked the Iranian leader’s movements closely, building what officials described as a detailed “pattern-of-life” profile that mapped his daily routines, locations and security arrangements.
The effort involved coordination between the Central Intelligence Agency and Israeli intelligence networks. The breakthrough reportedly came when intelligence sources identified a meeting of senior Iranian political and security officials scheduled to take place at a leadership compound in central Tehran on February 28.
Khamenei was expected to attend the meeting in person. The operation was initially planned as a night strike but was shifted to the morning after intelligence confirmed that the Iranian leader would be above ground at the compound at that time. At approximately 9:40 am local time, long-range missiles struck several locations within the compound almost simultaneously, in a rapid sequence that reportedly lasted less than a minute.
The near-synchronised explosions caught those inside by surprise, killing Khamenei and several other senior figures. Reports suggest Israeli fighter jets departed around 6 am Israel time carrying long-range munitions capable of reaching Tehran. The operation has been described by analysts as one of the most significant targeted strikes against Iran’s leadership in recent history, dramatically altering the political landscape of the country.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Beyond the geopolitical calculations and military strategies surrounding the strike, the tragedy highlights the profound human cost of escalating conflict. The death of a long-serving national leader and the loss of several members of his family illustrate how violence reverberates far beyond battlefields or political offices. Moments like these often deepen divisions, fuel anger and prolong cycles of retaliation that affect millions of ordinary people across the region.
As tensions between Iran, the United States and Israel continue to simmer, the risk of broader instability in the Middle East remains a pressing concern for the international community. The Logical Indian believes that while nations may pursue security and strategic interests, lasting peace can only be built through dialogue, diplomacy and respect for human life.
