A 20-year-old biomedical student from Chennai, who had travelled to Hyderabad for an internship, was allegedly raped by two men-including a friend she trusted-after a party in Bachupally on May 3. The accused, identified as Ajay and Hari, have been arrested and remanded to judicial custody following the survivor’s complaint to the Bachupally police.
Authorities have confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway, with evidence being collected and the survivor receiving support from officials. The case has reignited concerns about the safety of young women relocating for educational or professional opportunities.
Alleged Betrayal of Trust: Details of the Incident
According to police sources, the survivor was allegedly brought to Hyderabad by her friend Ajay, who had promised to help her secure an internship at a local pharmaceutical firm. She was reportedly provided accommodation at a ladies’ hostel in Kukatpally.
On May 4, Ajay allegedly invited her to a party at his friend Hari’s flat in Rajiv Gruhakalpa, Nizampet. During the gathering, she was allegedly served alcohol and, after becoming intoxicated, was allegedly sexually assaulted by both Ajay and Hari. Bachupally Inspector J Upender Rao stated, “Both accused have been arrested and sent to judicial remand.
We are collecting all necessary evidence and ensuring the survivor receives the required support.” The survivor’s courage in coming forward has been widely acknowledged, with officials emphasising their commitment to a fair and transparent investigation.
Pattern of Alleged Exploitation and Community Response
This incident allegedly highlights a disturbing pattern where trust is exploited under the guise of opportunity. Ajay, who was known to the survivor and had allegedly gained her family’s confidence, is accused of using the pretext of a career opportunity to lure her to Hyderabad.
The survivor’s ordeal only came to light after she allegedly approached the police and detailed the events of the night. The case has sparked renewed calls for vigilance, with advocacy groups urging educational institutions and employers to implement stronger support systems and safety protocols for young women, especially those living away from home.
Police have reiterated their appeal to the public to report any suspicious or predatory behaviour to help prevent such incidents in the future.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
This alleged crime is a grim reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by young women as they pursue their dreams in unfamiliar cities. The Logical Indian stands in solidarity with the survivor and calls for systemic reforms to ensure safer, more supportive environments in educational and professional spaces.
We believe that empathy, accountability, and community vigilance are essential in creating a culture where such incidents are prevented, and survivors are empowered to seek justice. What proactive steps can communities, institutions, and authorities take to better protect and support students and interns as they navigate new opportunities?
