India’s women’s hockey star Deepika has added another illustrious chapter to her young career, winning the Poligras Magic Skill Award 2024-25 for her breathtaking solo goal against world number one Netherlands during the FIH Hockey Pro League.

Selected through an intense global fan vote held from July 4 to 13, the award recognises singular brilliance and technical mastery in field hockey, with Deepika emerging as the people’s favourite in a fiercely contested international field.

The Defining Moment: A Goal That Changed the Game

During the Bhubaneswar leg of the FIH Pro League at Kalinga Stadium in February 2025, India faced an uphill battle against the dominant Netherlands side. Trailing 0–2, Deepika seized a fleeting chance in the 35th minute.

She collected the ball near halfway, embarked on a dazzling run, and sliced through the Dutch defence with speed and clever stickwork.

Surrounded by world-class opponents, she hugged the baseline, deftly lifted the ball over a defender’s stick, and finished with a precise strike that sent the ball past the Dutch goalkeeper.

Her goal inspired an Indian comeback, resulting in a 2–2 draw by full-time and an eventual shootout victory an achievement against the world’s top-ranked team that electrified fans and teammates alike.

Recognising Skill: The Poligras Magic Skill Award’s Prestige

The Poligras Magic Skill Award is internationally renowned, handed out each year to players one male and one female who produce the season’s most spectacular display of skill or ingenuity during the FIH Pro League.

The selection process is entirely democratic, powered by global fan votes, which this year also lauded Belgium’s Victor Wegnez for his behind-the-back finish in the men’s category.

Deepika’s feat was chosen over exceptional plays by Spain’s Patricia Alvarez and a creative team effort from the Australian Hockeyroos, underscoring the worldwide admiration for her moment of brilliance.

Elevating Indian Women’s Hockey: A Milestone Beyond Medals

Deepika’s award is not just a personal accolade it signals a broader leap for Indian women’s hockey: Highlights the increasing visibility and competitive spirit of Indian women on the global sporting stage.

Reflects the outcomes of relentless training, strategic planning, and cohesive team effort throughout the Pro League season. Offers fresh hope and inspiration, especially to young athletes dreaming of emulating Deepika’s journey.

Her achievement comes at a pivotal time as Indian women’s hockey aims to cement its status among global heavyweights, building on recent successes and driving further investment in grassroots development.
