India is witnessing a noticeable rise in active Covid-19 cases, which have now crossed 6,000, with 769 new infections reported over the past 48 hours, according to the latest update from the Union Health Ministry on June 8, 2025.

Four deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours, with one each reported from Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra. Kerala continues to bear the brunt of the surge, followed by Delhi, Gujarat, and West Bengal.

Health officials attribute this rise to the spread of new Omicron sub-variants that are more contagious but generally cause mild illness. Authorities continue to urge the public to remain cautious, especially vulnerable populations, as the country navigates this new phase of the pandemic.

Kerala and Delhi Lead the Surge as Mild Symptoms Predominate

Kerala remains the epicentre of the current Covid-19 wave, with active cases surpassing 1,800 and 192 new infections reported in a single day. Delhi follows with 665 active cases after adding 73 new infections recently. Gujarat and West Bengal also continue to report significant numbers, contributing to the overall rise in cases nationwide.

The four recent deaths involved elderly patients and individuals with underlying health conditions such as diabetes and respiratory illnesses, highlighting the continuing risk for vulnerable groups. A senior official from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare explained, “The surge is primarily driven by Omicron sub-variants like JN.1, NB.1.8.1, LF.7, and XFC.

While these variants are more transmissible, they have not been classified as variants of concern and generally cause mild symptoms. Nevertheless, we are closely monitoring the situation.” The ministry also reported that 760 patients have recovered and been discharged in the last 24 hours, reflecting ongoing recoveries amid the surge.

Background: Understanding the Current Wave and Government Measures

This recent spike follows a period of relative calm, with active cases having dropped to as low as 257 nationwide in late May. Experts attribute the resurgence to the emergence of new Omicron sub-variants that have higher transmissibility but do not appear to cause severe illness in most cases.

The World Health Organization currently classifies these as ‘Variants Under Monitoring,’ indicating the need for vigilance without raising immediate alarm. In response, the Indian government has ramped up surveillance efforts, including genome sequencing and monitoring of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases across states.

Mock drills and preparedness assessments have been conducted to ensure hospitals are ready to handle any sudden increase in severe cases. Public health messaging continues to emphasise vaccination, booster doses for eligible groups, and adherence to Covid-appropriate behaviour such as mask-wearing and hand hygiene.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The resurgence of Covid-19 cases in India, though currently manageable, reminds us that the pandemic’s challenges are not entirely behind us.

The Logical Indian believes that this phase calls for renewed collective responsibility, empathy, and kindness—especially toward the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions who remain most vulnerable. While the majority of infections are mild, the human cost of even a few deaths is significant and urges us to maintain caution without panic.
