India has witnessed a gradual but steady rise in Covid-19 infections, with 306 new cases and six deaths reported across the country in the past 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry’s latest update on Wednesday. The active caseload has climbed to 7,121, with Kerala reporting the highest number of new infections and fatalities.

Health officials attribute this increase to the spread of several Omicron sub-variants and have urged states to maintain vigilance, especially focusing on protecting vulnerable populations. While most cases remain mild, the government continues to monitor the situation closely to prevent any further escalation.

Kerala Leads the Surge as Health Authorities Emphasise Vigilance

Kerala remains the epicentre of the current Covid-19 surge, reporting 170 fresh infections in a single day, which has pushed its active cases to 2,223. Gujarat and Karnataka follow with 114 and 100 new cases respectively, while Delhi recorded 66 new infections, bringing its active tally to 757.

The six deaths reported include three in Kerala—an 87-year-old woman and two elderly men aged 69 and 78—two in Karnataka, and one in Maharashtra, involving a 43-year-old man with underlying health conditions. Officials have clarified that the majority of new infections are mild and manageable at home, but they caution that the elderly and those with comorbidities remain at significant risk.

Ranchi civil surgeon Prabhat Kumar noted, “The patient was suffering from multiple diseases and also tested positive for Covid-19,” highlighting the complexities in managing vulnerable cases. The Union Health Ministry has issued directives to states to ensure adequate oxygen supplies, isolation facilities, and essential medicines, alongside conducting mock drills to enhance preparedness.

Omicron Sub-Variants Drive the Current Wave; Experts Advocate Targeted Protection

The rise in cases is primarily driven by the spread of Omicron sub-variants such as JN.1, NB.1.8.1, LF.7, and XFG, which are currently classified by the World Health Organization as ‘Variants Under Monitoring’. These variants are known for their increased transmissibility but generally cause milder disease compared to earlier strains.

Health experts caution that despite this, the virus continues to pose a serious threat to immunocompromised individuals, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses.

The Indian Medical Association and government health advisories recommend targeted protection strategies rather than broad booster campaigns, emphasising the importance of mask-wearing, hand hygiene, and avoiding crowded indoor spaces. Widespread hybrid immunity—acquired through previous infections and vaccinations—has helped reduce severe outcomes, but vigilance remains crucial to prevent healthcare system strain.
