India Ranks Third In Artificial Intelligence Research Across The Globe: Analysis

Supported by

India ranks third globally concerning high-quality research publications in Artificial Intelligence (AI) but is at a significant distance from world leaders like China and the United States who are ranked first and second respectively. The analysis was done by research agency Itihaasa, which was founded by Kris Gopalakrishnan, former CEO and co-founder of Infosys reported The Hindu.

For the rankings, Itihaasa collected the number of citable documents between 2013 and 2017 in the field of AI which were listed by a compilation which tracks the trends in scientific publications, named Scimago. The term citable documents refer to the research publications in peer-reviewed journals.

China and United States on top

China is on the top of the list with 37,918 documents followed by the United States with 32,421 documents followed by India with 12,135 documents.

When computed using other metrics such as ‘citations’ – or the number of times an article is referenced, India stands fifth, trailing behind China, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. This means that the quality of the research produced needs improvement, same was observed by Dayasindhu N., one of the authors of the report ‘Landscape of AI/ML (Machine Learning) Research In India’.

According to the reports, the Indian Institute of Information Technology and the Indian Institute of Technology are the key centres in AI technology.

India is said to have a strong foothold in AI and Information Technology which looks forward to transforming the industry and academic circles. Through this report, an attempt was made to map and gauge the current state of AI-based research in India.

The agency interviewed 25 researchers in the country, who said that the industry and Government had provided enough funding for AI research.

Financial services, retail, monsoon forecasting, education and health care are some of the key field likely to benefit from AI. Suspending the fears that AI would eventually take away jobs, the report said that it was unlikely to happen so.

The NITI Ayog on last June released a discussion paper about the transformative potential of AI in India which said that the country could add $1 trillion to the economy by integrating AI into its economy.

LinkedIn.com report

Another report by professional networking site, LinkedIn.com, which came out in September last year, ranked India among the top three countries in AI skills. As reported by Live Mint, India was among USA, China, Israel and Germany where the penetration of AI is said to be the highest. Additionally, in 2017, the number of LinkedIn users adding AI skills to their profiles rose by 190% as compared to 2015.
