Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, categorically dismissed social media rumours of an impending nationwide lockdown on Friday, March 27, 2026. Addressing the public via X (formerly Twitter), Puri clarified that the Government of India has no such proposal under consideration, despite growing anxiety over the deepening Middle East conflict and its impact on energy supplies.
While global crude prices have surged and triggered panic-buying at some petrol pumps, the government assured stakeholders that it is monitoring supply chains in real-time and has secured enough crude stocks for the next 60 days.
Monitoring Supply Chains Amidst Global Flux
Elaborating on the government’s stance, Minister Puri emphasised that while the international situation remains “in flux,” India is fully prepared to handle emerging challenges. “Rumours of a lockdown in India are completely false. In such times, it is important that we remain calm, responsible, and united,” he stated. To protect consumers from the “vagaries of supply,” the government also announced a significant reduction in excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per litre each.
This move comes as a relief to citizens facing the heat of an international oil shock that has seen prices rise by nearly 30–50% in neighbouring regions. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman added that export duties have been imposed on diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) to ensure domestic availability remains the top priority.
Contextualising the Crisis: From Hormuz to Home
The speculation regarding a “Covid-style” lockdown appears to have stemmed from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent address in Parliament, where he urged the nation to remain “prepared and united” as it was during the pandemic.
This, coupled with the ongoing US-Iran conflict and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, led to fears of an “energy lockdown” to conserve fuel. However, officials clarified that India’s diplomatic efforts have ensured that Indian vessels continue to pass through critical maritime corridors.
Furthermore, India has successfully diversified its energy basket, ramping up imports from Russia to nearly 2 million barrels per day to offset Middle Eastern disruptions.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that in times of global uncertainty, the greatest casualty is often the truth. While the Middle East crisis presents genuine economic challenges, the weaponisation of misinformation only serves to create unnecessary panic and social disharmony.
We appreciate the government’s swift clarification and the proactive fiscal measures taken to shield the common man from rising fuel costs. However, true resilience is built on transparent communication and the collective responsibility of citizens to verify information before sharing. Let us choose dialogue over dread and facts over fear as we navigate these turbulent times together.
