The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has issued a travel advisory for Indian nationals amid the deadliest protests in decades shaking Nepal, which have led to the resignation of Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli. Citizens in Nepal are advised to stay indoors, avoid protest areas, and follow safety directives issued by local authorities and the Indian Embassy.
Indian travellers are urged to defer travel until the situation stabilises. The unrest has resulted in at least 19 deaths and disruptions including the temporary closure of Kathmandu’s airport and flight cancellations.
Travel Advisory Amid Rising Unrest and Safety Concerns
The MEA’s advisory highlights the need for heightened caution as widespread protests against corruption and a controversial social media ban escalate across Nepal. Indian nationals have been urged to adhere strictly to curfew orders and avoid streets and areas of conflict.
The embassy has provided helpline numbers to assist evacuees or those in distress. Both Air India and IndiGo have suspended flights due to the closure of Tribhuvan International Airport amid ongoing violence in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, complicating travel plans further.
Causes and Impact of Protests in Nepal
The protests erupted after Nepal’s government banned over two dozen social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and YouTube, igniting outrage particularly among the country’s youth who rely heavily on these platforms.
The demonstrations quickly turned violent, leading to police firing and prolonged clashes. Political instability peaked with the resignation of PM K P Sharma Oli. The violence has disrupted daily life, caused significant casualties, and raised concerns about regional peace and safety.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The Logical Indian emphasises the importance of peaceful dialogue and restraint from all parties amid Nepal’s political crisis. The safety and dignity of civilians and tourists must be paramount. As these protests highlight generational demands for freedom of expression and governance reform, responsible travel and clear communication become key.
