A 22-year-old woman, identified as Haniya Ayesha, was killed and her husband Abdul Basith injured after a speeding goods carrier rammed into their scooter and dragged it for nearly one to two kilometres in Hyderabad’s Madhapur area on Saturday night.
The couple, originally from Kerala, was returning home after watching a film when the collision occurred near the Mindspace underpass around 11:30 pm. Police said the truck driver, allegedly speeding and driving negligently, did not stop after the impact and is currently absconding, while the cleaner has been detained. Locals chased and intercepted the vehicle, and authorities have seized it, registered a case, and launched a manhunt as investigations continue.
Eyewitnesses Chase Truck, Driver Flees
According to police officials, the impact of the collision threw the husband onto the road, while Ayesha and the scooter became lodged under the truck, which continued moving for nearly two kilometres towards Jubilee Hills. Eyewitnesses reported seeing sparks from the trapped vehicle and chased the truck before stopping it near a checkpoint. By the time the vehicle was intercepted, the driver had fled the scene, leaving behind the cleaner, who was later taken into custody.
The victims were rushed to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared Ayesha dead on arrival, while Basith is undergoing treatment for multiple injuries. Police officials stated that CCTV footage from the stretch is being analysed and that strict action will be taken once the driver is apprehended and the sequence of events is fully established.
Late-Night Travel, Speeding Under Scrutiny In IT Corridor
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident occurred when the couple was heading back to their residence in Maheshwaram after a late-night outing. The stretch near Madhapur’s Mindspace part of Hyderabad’s busy IT corridor, often sees reduced traffic enforcement late at night, raising concerns about speeding heavy vehicles entering city limits.
This incident echoes a disturbing pattern seen in previous cases across India where victims were dragged by vehicles after collisions, often due to drivers failing to stop immediately. Such cases have triggered public concern and renewed demands for stricter enforcement, better surveillance, and accountability in hit-and-run incidents. Investigators are also examining whether fatigue, negligence or other factors contributed to the driver’s failure to halt after the crash.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
This tragic loss of life is not merely an accident, it reflects deeper systemic gaps in road safety, enforcement and driver accountability. The failure to stop after a collision points to a troubling disregard for human life that must be addressed through stricter laws, faster policing and sustained public awareness. At the same time, safer urban planning, better monitoring of heavy vehicles and responsible driving behaviour are essential to prevent such incidents. As cities expand and late-night mobility increases, how can we build a culture where every life on the road is treated with care, urgency, and dignity?
