A 42-year-old auto-rickshaw driver, Mohammed Mukarram, died after he was allegedly assaulted following a dispute over ₹10 in change in Hyderabad’s Vattepally area on Sunday, September 20. Police said an argument over the auto fare escalated into violence, leaving Mukarram critically injured.
He was subsequently taken for medical treatment, where he died, according to several reports, while his body was sent for post-mortem examination. Police have registered a case and identified Azeem and Shoaib as suspects, with the investigation underway.
Mukarram’s brother Mohammed Afroz alleged that several people were involved in the assault and that it took place in front of family members.
AIMIM Bahadurpura MLA Mohd Mubeen, who visited the family, demanded swift action and increased police patrolling in the area. A Rajendranagar police official confirmed that a case had been registered and that the investigation was ongoing.
₹10 Dispute Turns Fatal
The incident reportedly began with a disagreement over change after an auto-rickshaw journey. According to the preliminary police version carried by multiple outlets, the dispute involved ₹10 in change and later escalated into a physical assault.
Reports citing Mukarram’s family provide a more detailed account: his brother Afroz said a passenger had allegedly offered a ₹200 note for a ₹10 fare, following which Mukarram asked for the balance. An argument reportedly followed, after which others were allegedly called to the spot.
Afroz alleged that Mukarram was then assaulted by Azeem, Shoaib and several others. Some reports said the attack happened in front of Mukarram’s wife and children. The allegations have not been independently established, and the police investigation will determine the exact sequence of events and the role of each person named.
Reports also differ on the immediate medical timeline, with some saying Mukarram died while undergoing treatment and others, citing his brother, saying he died before he could be shifted to hospital.
Police Probe, Family Seeks Justice
Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding Mukarram’s death. The incident has been reported under the Falaknuma/Rajendranagar police jurisdiction in different reports, although the latest media reports place it under Rajendranagar

Police have not publicly established the complete sequence of the assault or announced convictions against any suspect. A Rajendranagar police official quoted by Republic World said, “We have registered a case, and investigation is underway,” while further details on arrests were awaited.
Meanwhile, AIMIM Bahadurpura MLA Mohd Mubeen visited Mukarram’s family and called for immediate action against those responsible. Mubeen alleged that the confrontation began over the ₹10 change and claimed that Azeem called several associates who allegedly assaulted Mukarram.
He urged the Rajendranagar DCP and Hyderabad Police Commissioner to take action and increase patrolling in Vattepally. Mubeen also alleged that the incident was the second murder on the same road within a month. These claims, including allegations about the suspects’ background and the number of people involved, remain allegations and have not been independently verified.
