The beginning of a special story

After a hugely successful career in the Telugu film industry, NTR entered politics with a bang and created an immediate impact. He could be credited for creating a unique Telugu identity.  NT was born on 28 May 1923 in 
Nimmakuru, a small village in 
Gudivada taluk of 
Krishna District, to a family of farmers. He eventually joined the Madras Service Commission before embarking on one of the most celebrated careers ever in Telegu film industry.

Innovative campaign to become the 1st Non- Congress Chief Minister of Andhra

NTR after entering politics would go on to change the politics of Andhra for ever besides having a lasting impact on national politics. The incumbent Congress was riddled with corruption and NTR made the most of the anti-incumbency wave to unleash one of the most innovative campaigns then to rout the congress and capture power with a sweep. It is widely reported that NTR was the first person to use Rath Yathra’s and open top van’s to campaign. A campaign which won him 199 out of the 294 seats in the united Andhra Pradesh assembly. He became the first non-congress chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. After Indira Gandhi was assassinated, the sympathy wave earned a landslide victory for the Congress across India except Andhra Pradesh. Such was NTR’s popularity in Andhra Pradesh. TDP achieved the rare distinction of becoming the first regional party to become the main opposition party in the Lok Sabha.

Achievements

NTR is widely remembered for his socialist policies including:

Provision of  home, clothes and food and subsidies for BPL people.

A strong advocate of 
women’s rights and was pivotal in bringing about an amendment to inheritance law in order to provide equal rights for women to inherit ancestral property

He introduced many populist schemes such as the 
Midday Meal Scheme for poor children, rice at 
₹ 2/kg, subsidised electricity and prohibiting the sale of alcohol in the state among others.

He was instrumental in implementing the 
Telugu Ganga project with support from the 
Government of Tamil Nadu, which provides water from the Krishna river for drinking and irrigation purposes to Rayalaseema and Chennai.

Sad Ending

The incumbent Chief minister lead of a coup against NTR and eventually became the party president and also went on to become the chief minister of the state much to the angst of NTR himself.
