A sensational claim began doing the rounds on social media earlier this week, that the Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, was preparing to introduce a bill banning the Hindi language in all forms across the state.

Several posts claimed that the proposed bill would prohibit the use of Hindi in films, hoardings, songs, and even within the state assembly. The rumour quickly sparked outrage and confusion, reviving old debates around Tamil pride and anti-Hindi sentiments.

However, the claim is completely false. Tamil Nadu’s fact check unit clarified in a post on X.

Claim

A viral claim asserts that the Tamil Nadu government is planning to introduce legislation in the state assembly to ban the Hindi language in all forms (e.g. in films, hoardings, signage, songs, etc.).

The viral message appears to have originated from a few social media handles and blogs that cited unnamed “sources” claiming such a bill would be tabled during the ongoing Assembly session. Some media portals even published speculative headlines before verifying the information, adding fuel to the misinformation.

Fact

Amid the growing chatter, Tamil Nadu’s official fact-check unit stepped in and issued a categorical denial.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the @Tn_factcheck handle wrote:

A claim is being circulated that a bill has been introduced to ban Hindi language in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. This claim is completely false. The Secretary of the Legislative Assembly has clarified that no such proposal has been received or is under consideration.”

The clarification put the rumour to rest.

Top three sources confirming the fact:

  • New Indian Express
  • Hindustan Times
  • CNBC TV18

Why This Matters

Tamil Nadu has historically been vocal against the “imposition” of Hindi, a sentiment that stems from decades of linguistic and cultural assertion. That’s precisely why misinformation around the issue spreads fast, it plays on genuine emotions attached to Tamil identity and politics.

But in this case, the rumour was entirely fabricated, likely designed to provoke unnecessary linguistic tension online.

Verdict: ❌ False

There is no bill, no proposal, and no plan to ban Hindi in Tamil Nadu. The viral claim is baseless and misleading, as confirmed by the state’s official fact-check unit and the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Secretariat. ban bill in Tamil Nadu is wholly false and misleading, intended to create unnecessary confusion and tension.
