The Union Home Ministry has formally approved the renaming of Jalalabad town in Shahjahanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, to Parshurampuri. The decision was communicated through an official letter to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary, confirming that the Centre has no objection to the proposed change. The approval follows a long-standing demand from local authorities and community leaders who view the renaming as restoring the town’s cultural and religious identity.

Prasada described this decision as a proud moment for the Sanatani community, underlining that the name change honours the legacy of Lord Parshuram, one of Lord Vishnu’s revered avatars. He called himself a mere medium helping execute this “holy work” and prayed for blessings from Lord Parshuram for the country’s progress and unity.

A Tribute to Religious Heritage and Local Identity

Jalalabad has a rich historical background dating back to the Mughal era, having been founded around 1560 during the reign of Emperor Akbar. The original name reflected its Mughal cultural influence. However, the region carries significant religious importance for devotees of Lord Parshuram, traditionally believed to be the birthplace of this warrior sage, who is also regarded as a symbol of justice and dharma in Hindu mythology.

The town hosts several ancient temples dedicated to Parshuram and is considered sacred ground for followers. The name Parshurampuri, meaning ‘City of Parshuram’, resonates deeply with the religious sentiments of the local population. This cultural linkage played a central role in the growing demand for the name change, which proponents argue better reflects the town’s spiritual heritage.

The Process Behind the Renaming

The renaming effort was initiated by local governing bodies, with resolutions passed by the Nagar Palika board in 2018 and renewed in 2023 to officially request the change. The proposal underwent scrutiny and received support from Uttar Pradesh’s state government before being sent to the Union Home Ministry for final approval.

In August 2025, the Home Ministry cleared the renaming after verifying there were no objections or conflicts with administrative protocols. An official directive was issued to notify the new name in Hindi, English, and other regional languages, and to circulate the information to departments such as the Survey of India, the railway ministry, and postal authorities to update official records and maps.

Supporters of the renaming include BJP leaders such as Jalalabad MLA Hariprakash Verma, who framed the change as a step to replace a name associated with colonial imposition with one reflecting indigenous cultural pride. This move aligns with several similar initiatives across Uttar Pradesh and other parts of India aimed at reclaiming local identities through renaming.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Renaming cities and towns is a powerful expression of cultural identity and historical reinterpretation. It can serve as a way to preserve heritage, celebrate local religious traditions, and foster pride within communities. However, such transformations also come with social responsibilities. India’s pluralistic society thrives on mutual respect, inclusivity, and an acknowledgment of its diverse histories.

The Logical Indian believes that decisions on renaming should always prioritise harmony and coexistence, ensuring no community feels alienated or marginalised in the process. While cultural pride is essential, it should be cultivated alongside dialogue and kindness towards all sections of society sharing common spaces
