A 26-year-old man named Altaf, hailing from Karnataka, was arrested for allegedly desecrating the Katta Maisamma Temple in Hyderabad’s Safilguda area on Saturday.
The accused reportedly entered the temple premises and committed indecent acts near the deity’s idol, which led to an immediate and violent confrontation with local devotees.
After being thrashed by a mob, he was handed over to the Neredmet police, who have since placed him in judicial custody. The incident has sparked a massive political row, with BJP leaders calling it a deliberate act of blasphemy.
Katta Maisamma Temple
The incident unfolded around 8:30 pm when devotees at the Katta Maisamma temple noticed a man acting suspiciously near the sanctum sanctorum.
According to eyewitnesses and police reports, the man, later identified as Altaf, allegedly urinated and defecated near the main idol, a site of deep religious significance for the local community.
The news of the desecration spread like wildfire through the neighborhood, causing hundreds of residents to descend upon the temple. The act has been viewed as a direct assault on religious sentiments, leading to a volatile situation that required a heavy police presence to control.
Police Intervention
Before the authorities could arrive at the scene, the situation turned violent as local residents caught the accused. Several viral videos show the mob questioning Altaf before physically assaulting him. He was seen being dragged and thrashed by the angry crowd while some tried to intervene.
Once the Neredmet police reached the spot, they rescued the accused from the mob and shifted him to a local hospital for medical treatment before formally recording his arrest.
Officials are now reviewing CCTV footage from the temple to establish the exact sequence of events and identify any other individuals who may have been involved.
BJP Demands “Bulldozer” Action
The desecration has taken a sharp political turn, with senior BJP leaders reaching the temple to lead protests. BJP MLA Raja Singh and Telangana BJP President N Ramchander Rao have condemned the incident in the strongest terms, labeling it a planned act of “blasphemy.”
During a protest outside the police station, BJP supporters raised slogans against the state government, demanding that the authorities take “bulldozer action” against the accused’s property.
They alleged that the Congress-led government has failed to protect Hindu temples and warned of a state-wide agitation if the investigation is not conducted with absolute transparency.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that the desecration of any place of worship is an act of extreme disrespect that harms the social fabric of our nation. Such incidents are deeply painful for believers and deserve a swift, thorough, and transparent legal response.
At the same time, we must reiterate that mob violence and calls for extrajudicial punishment like “bulldozer action” have no place in a democratic society governed by the rule of law. Peace and dialogue are our strongest tools against those who wish to create division.
As the nation celebrates the revival of Somnath Temple, it’s equally important to acknowledge and protect temples like Katta Maisamma in Hyderabad, where a Muslim man defecated at the temple yesterday.
