A holiday has been declared for all educational institutions in Kerala’s Thrissur district on Saturday, July 4, as heavy rainfall continues to affect the state during an active southwest monsoon.
Thrissur District Collector Arjun Pandian announced that all government, aided, unaided, CBSE, ICSE and Kendriya Vidyalaya schools, Anganwadis, Madrasas, tuition centres and professional colleges will remain closed. However, previously scheduled public examinations and interviews will be conducted as planned.
The precautionary move comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts continued heavy rain across Kerala, while several other states are also witnessing intense monsoon activity.
Collector Announces Precautionary Closure
In an official statement, Thrissur District Collector Arjun Pandian said the holiday had been declared to ensure the safety of students, teachers and staff amid persistent rainfall. The order applies to all educational institutions irrespective of their management, but does not extend to public examinations or interviews that were scheduled in advance.
The IMD has issued a yellow warning for Thrissur and several other Kerala districts, forecasting heavy rainfall between 7 cm and 11 cm at isolated places. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas and follow official advisories.
Monsoon Intensifies Across India
The holiday in Thrissur comes as the southwest monsoon gains strength across the country. According to the IMD, widespread rainfall is expected over Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and parts of eastern and north-eastern India over the coming days.
Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has also prompted weather alerts in several states, with authorities warning of possible waterlogging, flash floods, landslides and transport disruptions. Kerala has experienced frequent spells of heavy rain over the past week, leading district administrations to issue precautionary closures whenever weather conditions pose risks to students and commuters.
