Keonjhar, Odisha – In a heartbreaking incident on January 24, 2025, Namrata Behera, a 21-year-old MCA student from Dalang village, tragically fell to her death from the Puri-Barbil Express while attempting to take a selfie near the Tangiriapal-Sagadapata railway station in Keonjhar district. Reports indicate that the tragedy occurred as she was returning home with friends after completing her exams.

Despite immediate intervention by railway officials, Namrata was pronounced dead at the scene. Local authorities have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Details of the Incident

Eyewitness accounts reveal that Namrata was travelling with four friends when the accident occurred. As she leaned out of the moving train to capture a selfie and admire the scenic landscape, she reportedly lost her balance and fell onto the tracks. A railway trackman witnessed the fall and quickly alerted railway police. Upon arrival, officials discovered Namrata’s lifeless body near the tracks. Preliminary assessments indicate that she sustained fatal injuries, leaving no chance for medical intervention.

Her father, Bijayananda Behera, a local vegetable vendor, expressed profound grief over the untimely loss of his daughter, who was known for her academic excellence and aspirations for a bright future.

Safety Concerns Highlighted

This tragic incident has reignited concerns about safety on trains, particularly among young passengers who may engage in risky behaviour for social media validation. Railway authorities have repeatedly issued advisories urging passengers not to lean out of moving trains or partake in other unsafe activities.

Data from railway officials indicate that incidents involving dangerous selfies have been on the rise nationwide, prompting calls for stricter awareness campaigns. Experts warn that the allure of social media trends can often blind individuals to the potential risks associated with their actions.

Ongoing Investigation

Local police, in collaboration with railway authorities, are investigating the exact sequence of events leading to Namrata’s death. Officials are also exploring whether additional preventive measures—such as enhanced safety announcements or physical barriers—could have averted this tragedy.

The Logical Indian Perspective

Namrata Behera’s untimely demise serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers that can arise when social media trends intersect with reckless behaviour. This incident is not merely an isolated tragedy; it reflects a growing pattern where young individuals, driven by the desire for likes and shares, may prioritise virtual validation over personal safety.

As a society, it is imperative to initiate conversations that prioritise responsible technology use. Educational institutions, families, and communities must work together to foster awareness about safe travel practices, especially among students.

The Logical Indian believes that while technology and social media can be powerful tools for positive change, they should never come at the cost of a life. Let us take this moment to reflect and engage in meaningful discussions on how we can collectively advocate for safer practices. How can we encourage young people to embrace technology responsibly while ensuring their safety?
