Breast tenderness is one of the symptoms of pregnancy. It starts happening around week 4 to week 6. During this time, breasts become extremely nesh and tender. Breasts keep growing throughout the pregnancy and in this process are being culminated with colostrum-which is a form of milk produced by the mammary gland. This becomes the first milk or first food of the new-born baby.

Causes of breast tenderness:

The hormones estrogen and progesterone are to be blamed for this. Other reasons include the storage and building of fats in the breasts to get them ready for producing milk.

After conceiving, the breasts become sore and tender within two weeks, thus can even stretch due to the rise in progesterone hormone.

Other likely changes in breasts include:

The nipples bulge out more than they normally do. They become utterly soft and feel painful if touched.

The areolas is the skin around the nipples. It will start getting dark and pigmented as the pregnancy progresses. Montgomery tubercles can be spotted there as well which are small bumps also kind of an oil producing gland that lubricates the area. During late days of pregnancy, the areolas becomes a lot darker.

Beneath the skin of breasts, blue veins can be seen which carry nutrients from mother to baby. As the pregnancy advances, they become more and more visible.

In the third month, the colostrum is produced. During later days, pregnant women leak a yellowish liquid in small amounts. It isn’t universal, some women don’t even leak.

Lumpy breasts are natural during pregnancy in women, it can happen due to the galactoceles that is a milky substance present in mammary glands, or due to fibro adenomas that is a breast tumour. Though developing breast cancer isn’t frequent in pregnant women.

What can be done to relieve sore breasts?

Keep your partner in check with it and tell him about the pain, so he is cautious around you.

Only use good quality bra that will help prevent further sagging of breasts and reduce the pain to some extent. Sleep in a cotton sports bra, if you are feeling uncomfortable.

During the pregnancy some women find their breasts growing exponentially. The breasts become tender before they prepare to grow. Sometimes their cup size’s up 1-2 times as well. They are the most swollen before giving birth. But they do get back in their near real size afterwards if the mother doesn’t breastfeed.

Avoid underwrite bras as much as possible since they feel uncomfortable during breastfeeding.

It’s not necessary that all the soon mothers-to-be will experience all these changes and these are not necessary for indicating healthy pregnancy.
