A 36-year-old woman, Shantiben Akedivala, was brutally murdered in Palanpur, Gujarat, by a trusted associate of 15 years over a financial dispute involving 790 grams of gold, silver jewellery, and ₹2 lakh in cash. On the night of March 22, the victim was allegedly lured to a furniture shop, intoxicated, and strangled with a bike clutch wire by the prime accused, Rekha Rathod, her husband, and two accomplices.
The Palanpur City West Police have since arrested all four suspects after the victim’s body was discovered in a sack dumped in a deserted drain.
A Betrayal Of Decades
The investigation revealed a chilling level of premeditation in what the police describe as a “cold-blooded conspiracy.” Shantiben had shared a close bond with Rekha Rathod, who had worked for the Akedivala family for over a decade as a domestic help and cook. “The accused had won the complete confidence of the family over 15 years,” a senior police official stated, noting that the murder took place at Rekha’s furniture shop in the Hanuman Tekri area.
After the strangulation, the group allegedly attempted to erase evidence by disposing of the body in a remote location.
Seeds Of The Conflict
The roots of the crime trace back to a gesture of kindness made a year ago. Shantiben had reportedly lent Rekha a substantial amount of gold, silver, and cash to help her through a difficult period. However, as Shantiben began requesting the return of these assets, the relationship soured, leading to mounting tensions.
The police shifted their focus to Rekha after Shantiben went missing following her visit to the shop at 8:00 PM on the night of the incident. This tragedy highlights a disturbing trend where long-standing interpersonal trust is discarded for material gain.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
This horrific incident is a sobering reminder of how easily greed can erode the foundations of human trust and empathy. For a relationship spanning 15 years to end in such a violent betrayal is not just a criminal failure, but a moral one that shakes the conscience of a community.
At The Logical Indian, we believe that no amount of wealth is worth the price of a human life or the sanctity of a long-term bond. We must strive for a society where dialogue and mediation replace violence, and where the safety of our neighbours is protected by mutual respect rather than threatened by avarice.
