Govt Hikes Export Duty on Diesel to ₹14 per Litre, ATF to ₹12.50 per Litre Amid West Asia Crisis

Effective June 16, the Union Government has increased windfall export duties on diesel and jet fuel to disincentivise private refiners from prioritising high-premium international sales over local market needs.

The Union Government has increased windfall export duties on diesel to ₹14 per litre and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) to ₹12.5 per litre, effective June 16, 2026.

This fortnightly adjustment balances corporate profit margins with national energy security amidst severe global supply disruptions caused by the ongoing West Asia crisis. The policy directly targets private refiners, disincentivising them from prioritising high-premium overseas sales over local market commitments.

Securing Domestic Supplies

Administered through the Finance Ministry’s Special Additional Excise Duty (SAED), the duty on diesel rose by 50 paise from ₹13.5, while jet fuel surged by ₹3 from ₹9.5 per litre.

Petrol export levies remain steady at ₹1.5 per litre. Ministry officials clarified that excise duties on fuel cleared for domestic consumption are completely unchanged, shielding everyday Indian consumers from inflationary pump price hikes.

Fortnightly Windfall Tax Policy

First introduced on March 26, 2026, as the US-Israel-Iran conflict sent global crude soaring past $100 a barrel, this tactical review mechanism recalibrates every two weeks based on shifting international benchmarks.

By capturing “supernormal” corporate gains during global supply uncertainty, the state ensures that India’s vast domestic refining capacity serves its citizens first before chasing volatile international premiums.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Prioritising public welfare over corporate profits is a necessary act of economic empathy during global instability.

By insulating local fuel prices, the government protects common citizens from bearing the financial brunt of distant conflicts, fostering a sense of harmony and national resilience.
