In a deeply disturbing incident in Gorakhpur’s Demusa village, a family dispute allegedly culminated in the death of 60-year-old Rajpati Devi after her daughter-in-law, Seema Devi, allegedly assaulted her by repeatedly banging her head against a wall. The attack allegedly occurred on July 13, 2025, and despite medical intervention at BRD Medical College, Rajpati Devi succumbed to her injuries on July 20.

Following her death, Seema Devi was arrested on July 22 and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, reported Amar Ujala. Police investigations are ongoing, focusing on the family dynamics that allegedly led to this fatal violence. According to Amar Ujala, police took swift action after receiving the complaint and after the victim’s death.

Domestic Discord Turns Deadly

The horrifying episode allegedly began on the afternoon of July 13 in Beechlapura Tola, Demusa village, reportedly triggered by longstanding tensions within the household. Prabha Devi, the elder daughter-in-law, filed a complaint detailing the alleged sequence of events: during a heated family quarrel, Seema Devi allegedly lost control and physically attacked her mother-in-law, Rajpati Devi.

Witnesses stated that Seema allegedly abused the elder woman verbally, then dragged her by the hair and slammed her head multiple times against the wall with such force that Rajpati lost consciousness. Despite attempts to save her, she never regained consciousness and passed away after a week-long fight for life.

The brutal nature of the assault has left the local community shaken and raised concerns about underlying issues in domestic relationships. Amar Ujala reports the assault happened around 4 pm, after which the victim fell into a coma and was admitted to BRD Medical College.

Prompt Legal Action and Police Investigation

Following the attack, Rajpati Devi was immediately admitted to BRD Medical College, where she received urgent medical care until her death on July 20. Initially, police registered the case under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (attempt to murder), reflecting the alleged seriousness of the assault. After Rajpati’s demise, authorities upgraded the charge to Section 304 Part I IPC, which pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

On July 22, acting on the complaint and evidence collected by Gagaha police, Seema Devi was arrested from her residence and remanded to judicial custody. Amar Ujala quotes the local police station chief, Sushil Kumar Chaurasia, confirming the arrest at 10:35 am and emphasizing their commitment to justice and maintaining peace during the ongoing investigation.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This heartbreaking incident shines a spotlight on the urgent need for proactive measures addressing family disputes before they spiral into violence. The Logical Indian calls for enhanced awareness, accessible support systems, and community outreach programs focused on conflict resolution, mental health, and domestic violence prevention.

Families should be empowered through counselling services, helplines, and education on healthy communication to avoid such fatal outcomes. It is crucial for the legal framework to work hand in hand with social initiatives aimed at protecting vulnerable individuals and promoting peaceful coexistence.
