About Goonj

Founded in 1999, Goonj bridges the gap between urban surplus and rural scarcity by turning underutilized resources into tools for sustainable development. Operating across 25 states and union territories, the organization focuses on inclusivity, dignity, and environmental sustainability. In FY 2022-23, Goonj directly impacted 2.8 million lives, advancing its mission of creating long-term social and ecological resilience.

Goonj’s Contribution to Nation Building

Goonj’s approach to nation-building integrates resource circularity with community-driven development. By addressing critical areas like disaster relief, water conservation, education, livelihood, and menstrual health, Goonj creates scalable solutions rooted in dignity and inclusivity. Programs such as Cloth for Work (C4W) and Not Just a Piece of Cloth (NJPC) empower communities to lead their own development projects, fostering resilience and ownership.

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Goonj contributes to poverty alleviation (SDG 1), quality education (SDG 4), clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), and responsible consumption and production (SDG 12). Details of Programs & Impact (Last 3 Years):

1. Cloth for Work (C4W) – Circularity for Development

Focus: Empowering rural communities through material circularity.
Details: The Cloth for Work (C4W) initiative barters urban surplus for labor, enabling communities to undertake self-identified development projects such as road repair, check dam construction, and pond creation.
Impact: Facilitated 400,000 person-days of livelihood creation and completed over 5,100 community projects.
Regions: Rural villages across India.

2. RAHAT – Disaster Relief Initiative

Focus: Rapid response and rehabilitation for disaster-hit areas.
Details: Goonj’s RAHAT initiative provides essential kits to families affected by floods, cyclones, and cold waves, ensuring quick recovery and long-term support.
Impact: Supported over 63,200 families, reaching 316,000 individuals.
Regions: Disaster-prone regions, including Assam, Bihar, and Odisha.

3. Water Conservation Projects

Focus: Reviving water resources for sustainable agriculture.
Details: Community-led efforts include the construction of 118,000+ micro-ponds, canals, and check dams to improve water accessibility.
Impact: Enabled the creation of over 4,700 water assets, enhancing agricultural productivity and water security.
Regions: Drought-prone regions across Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.

4. Not Just A Piece of Cloth (NJPC) – Menstrual Health Initiative

Focus: Promoting menstrual hygiene and awareness.
Details: Goonj has distributed over 1.3 million MY Pads and installed 38 MY Pad ATMs while conducting awareness sessions to break menstrual taboos.
Impact: Reached 87 districts, conducting over 3,300 Break the Silence sessions, improving menstrual health for marginalized women.
Regions: Remote villages across Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.

5. School to School (S2S) – Education Initiative

Focus: Addressing rural education gaps with urban contributions.
Details: Through donations of books, school kits, and teaching resources, Goonj has improved learning conditions in schools while enhancing infrastructure.
Impact: Benefited over 1,900 schools, distributing 451,000 books and 200,000 school kits.
Regions: Rural schools across Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Chhattisgarh.

6. Environmental and Agricultural Initiatives

Focus: Strengthening resilience in food systems and biodiversity.
Details: Goonj has planted over 1 million saplings, including 600,000 mangroves in the Sundarbans, and developed 2,600 kitchen gardens to support self-reliant farming.
Impact: Supported farmers across 127 districts, promoting food security and ecological restoration.
Regions: Coastal areas of West Bengal and farming communities across Odisha and Bihar

Stories from the Ground

For Kalpana Ajay Kurkute from Palghar, joining Goonj’s Production Centre transformed her life. Struggling with insufficient farm income and medical expenses for her daughter, Kalpana leveraged her sewing skills to earn a steady income. She shares, “Now I can afford my daughter’s treatment and provide quality education for my children. My situation has changed completely.”

In Kolkata, ten-year-old Aayushmaan Jalan embraced Goonj’s mission during a summer camp, collecting stationery for School Kits and crafting Goonj Kee Gullak using recycled materials. His mother, Vandana, reflects, “Goonj has made my son more responsible and mindful of the resources he has. It has changed how we view giving and sustainability.”

Annual CSR Spend

Goonj’s financial data over the last three fiscal years highlights its unwavering commitment to maximizing programmatic impact while maintaining financial efficiency.

  • 2020-21: Total expenses amounted to ₹71.49 crore, with ₹64.33 crore (90%) dedicated to programs.
  • 2021-22: Goonj’s spending increased significantly to ₹114.80 crore, with ₹103.32 crore allocated to program expenses, marking its highest impact-driven expenditure.
  • 2022-23: Despite a dip in income, Goonj maintained a strong program focus, spending ₹77.99 crore out of a total ₹86.65 crore on community initiatives.

With over 90% of its expenditure consistently directed toward programs, Goonj continues to exemplify financial prudence and its dedication to transformative grassroots development.
