Google’s proposed US$15 billion investment in an AI-focused data centre in Andhra Pradesh has brought into focus a challenge that is becoming increasingly relevant for large technology projects in India: balancing economic growth with environmental concerns.
While the project promises jobs and investment, questions raised over water availability and its proximity to ecologically sensitive areas have triggered legal scrutiny, making it a closely watched case for future digital infrastructure development.
Google Data Centre
The proposed facility in Visakhapatnam represents Google’s largest announced investment in India to date. According to Reuters, the Andhra Pradesh government estimates that the project could generate around 188,000 jobs, reinforcing the state’s efforts to attract large-scale technology investments.
However, a public interest litigation filed before the Andhra Pradesh High Court has questioned the project’s environmental implications, including concerns over water availability and potential impacts on nearby wildlife habitats. The court is scheduled to hear the matter on 24 August.
Google has said the project will incorporate advanced air-cooling and sound-dampening technologies designed to minimise its environmental footprint. The Andhra Pradesh government has also maintained that the facility will not compromise drinking water supplies for residents.
Water Availability Under Focus
One of the central issues in the case is water availability. Reuters reported that Visakhapatnam already faces a water shortfall of approximately 70 million litres per day, based on official documents and local authorities.
Environmental groups have argued that large infrastructure projects should account for existing resource constraints when planning long-term operations. The state government, however, has said adequate arrangements will be made without affecting domestic water requirements.
The differing positions highlight the growing importance of resource planning as states compete to attract investments in advanced digital infrastructure.
