The Indian government has approved a ₹3,295 crore scheme to develop 40 lesser-known tourist destinations across 23 states, aiming to enhance tourism infrastructure and promote sustainable practices. This initiative, announced by Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, is expected to decongest popular tourist spots and stimulate local economies through interest-free loans for a 50-year period. The projects must be completed within two years, with the first installment of funding already disbursed.

Transforming Tourism Across India

On November 28, 2024, the Centre officially sanctioned ₹3,295 crore under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme for the development of 40 tourism projects. Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat emphasized that the initiative aims to transform lesser-known sites into iconic attractions, such as Bateshwar in Uttar Pradesh and Gandikota in Andhra Pradesh. “This program is designed to reduce congestion at high-traffic tourist spots and ensure a more equitable distribution of visitors across the country,” he stated. The Ministry received 87 proposals totaling over ₹8,000 crore before selecting these projects based on their potential for future growth and sustainability.

A Comprehensive Approach to Development

The SASCI scheme represents a significant investment in India’s tourism sector, focusing on creating long-term economic benefits through sustainable practices. Selected projects include enhancing infrastructure at locations like Matsyagandha Lake in Bihar and developing an underwater museum in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra. The funding will be provided as interest-free loans with a repayment period of 50 years, allowing states to improve their tourism offerings without impacting their debt levels. The Ministry of Tourism has already released 66% of the allocated funds to facilitate immediate project commencement.

Promoting Sustainable Tourism

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to address the challenges faced by India’s tourism industry, particularly overcrowding at popular destinations. By investing in lesser-known locations, the government aims to diversify tourist experiences and promote regional development. Minister Shekhawat noted that this approach not only enhances local economies but also encourages private investment in tourism infrastructure. “Our government will keep focusing on enhancing India’s tourism infrastructure to ensure more people can experience the wonders of Incredible India,” stated Prime Minister Narendra Modi in support of this initiative.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The Centre’s ₹3,295 crore investment in developing lesser-known tourist destinations marks a pivotal step towards promoting inclusive growth in India’s tourism sector.
