When Kerala MLA VK Prasanth asked people to give him books instead of flowers, little did the young MLA know that the response would be overwhelming.

On Thursday, November 14, the newly elected Vattiyoorkavu MLA from CPI(M), in a Facebook Post had asked people to give him books instead of bouquets. “The welcoming parades will start tomorrow. I request you to welcome me with books,” the post read.

The MLA came up with the innovative idea to help some schools in Vattiyoorkavu constituency that had requested him for books.

“Some government schools here had approached me asking if I could do anything to start school libraries. With the books we have collected now, libraries can be started in three schools,” Prasanth was quoted telling The News Minute.

“What I saw from the next morning was overwhelming,” Prasanth told the media. “At such short notice, so many people have come forward to donate books. If they were informed much earlier, we could have collected so many more,” he added.

From children to the elderly, hundreds of people gave him books; not just at the venue of the events, but along the way as well.

Earlier today (November 19), Prasanth further wrote on Facebook, “I have recieved over 3500 books. These books will be given to the government schools in Vattiyoorkavu constituency. I thank everyone who welcomed me with books.”

Prasanth had become people’s favourite and was lauded as ‘Mayor bro’ for collecting truckloads of relief materials for victims of Kerala floods this year.

As per reports, he guided volunteers and truck drivers at the flood relief collection point at the Corporation Office. In 2015, he had become the youngest mayor of Kerala’s largest corporation at the age of 34.
