Kerala Launches Free Aviation Training for Transgender Individuals: A Step Towards Inclusivity

Kerala has unveiled a pioneering initiative that provides free training for transgender individuals in the aviation sector, aiming to enhance their employment opportunities and promote inclusivity.

The Kerala government has launched a free training program for transgender individuals in the aviation sector, part of the PRIDE Employment Project, which aims to empower this marginalized community. The initiative offers two months of free accommodation and training in various aviation roles, with applications open until November 27. Participants must hold a degree and be under 27 years old, and the program seeks to enhance employment opportunities for transgender persons who face significant discrimination in the job market.

Empowering Transgender Individuals in Aviation 

The Kerala Knowledge Economy Mission, in collaboration with the Department of Social Justice, has initiated this program targeting transgender individuals from Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts. Training will cover areas such as airport operationscargo operations, and customer service, with scholarships available for successful candidates. “This initiative is crucial for providing equal employment opportunities to all, regardless of gender identity,” remarked a government spokesperson. The program aims to equip participants with essential skills and facilitate their entry into the aviation workforce.

Context and Background 

This training initiative is part of a broader effort by the Kerala government to support transgender individuals, including previous initiatives like the Sakalyam scheme, which provides vocational training. The PRIDE project was announced by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on June 28, 2023, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing unemployment and societal invisibility faced by transgender persons. Since its launch, over 382 individuals have registered through the Digital Workforce Management System (DWMS), with plans to include more beneficiaries from the Social Justice department.
