“It is not blood that makes your family, it’s love” – this line holds true for most relationships in our day-to-day lives. In a heartwarming gesture, 40-year-old Diti Lahiri donated her kidney to a junior colleague Marshneil Sinha in Fortis Hospital, Kolkata.

What happened?

Marshneil Sinha, a woman also in her forties, had been suffering from a life-threatening kidney disease for five years. Both of the women are employed in the IT sector. Lahiri is Sinha’s senior colleague at work.

According to The Times of India, Lahiri first came to know about Sinha’s condition when she was working as a project coordinator at ITC Infotech in Bengaluru. She got to know that Sinha suffers from shrinking kidney, which meant that she required regular dialysis.

She was battling her condition and working simultaneously. With the passage of time, her kidney did not permit her to work in Bangalore anymore and she moved back to her hometown, Bokaro, Jharkhand. She continued to work from Bokaro.

It is then Lahiri found out that Sinha cannot survive without a kidney transplant.

Parents could not donate a kidney

Sinha’s parents themselves suffered from health issues and hence were not allowed to donate their kidneys. Her sister was to get married soon and the groom’s family did not permit her to donate the kidney.

Lahiri followed her junior’s case closely and realised that she was in desperate need of help. She then consulted Shibaji Basu, a urologist and a long-time family friend for his assessment. The doctor also said that Sinha was in urgent need of a kidney. The problem arose because non-relatives are not allowed to donate kidneys in many states. Thankfully, West Bengal is a state that permits kidney transplant like that.

“I had made up my mind to donate one of my kidneys because my mother has been living a healthy life on one kidney for years now. She is more active than most of us. I am single and that perhaps made it easier for me. My parents were surprised initially but finally got around to supporting my decision,” Lahiri said.

Legal hassle

Both Lahiri and her mother Monideepa had to go through a nine-month-long vetting process including the filing of an affidavit at the Alipur police court and then subsequently visiting the first-class magistrate, submitting relevant documents and various police verifications. All this was done to make sure that the transplant was happening out of the goodwill of the heart and not because of monetary issues.

After the successful operation by Dr Shibaji Basu on September 3, the two ladies are now doing well. The Logical Indian applauds the courage and kindness of Ms Diti Lahiri for donating her kidney to her junior. This gesture warms our heart and restores faith in humanity.
