Country’s poorest serving Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has a bank balance of just Rs 2410, As per his latest affidavit.

Sarkar has served as the Chief Minister of Tripura for five consecutive terms (since 1998 to present). While filing nomination papers for the Dhanpur constituency in the upcoming assembly polls, he made his financial details public.

According to the affidavit submitted by him, Manik has Rs 1,520 cash in hand and Rs 2,410 deposits in his account in a nationalised bank. He does not have any other bank deposits and has never filed an income tax return. During the last elections in 2013, he had 9,720 in his bank account which is significantly more.

Veteran Communist Leader

The Veteran communist leader also claims to have a non-agricultural land measuring 0.0118 acres in Agartala, which is jointly owned with his siblings. These are his possessions after being in power for five consecutive terms.

He donates his entire salary of Rs 26,315 to the CPI(M) and receives Rs.5000 monthly from the party fund as subsistence allowances. The five-time Chief Minister of Tripura still does not carry a mobile phone. He may be facing a stiff challenge from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which is very active on social media, yet he does not have any social media presence or an email account.

He also stated in his election declaration that his wife Panchali Bhattacharjee, a retired state government employee has Rs 20,140 cash in hand. Bhattacharjee has a total of Rs 12,15,714.78 in her bank accounts. Sarkar and his wife don’t even have a personal residence and lives in the official CM residence. The CM’s wife is often spotted travelling in auto-rickshaw like most others in Agartala.

BJP’s Waterloo moment

The BJP has been on a winning spree in the North East, and 69-year-old Manik Sarkar is probably fighting one of the fiercest electoral battles of his lifetime, but CPM’s Sitaram Yechury feels Sarkar is the general who will give the BJP its ‘Waterloo’ moment.

The Logical Indian Take

Chandrababu Naidu is the richest Chief Minister of India, with a net worth of Rs.48 crores more than the person who holds second position in being richest. He has a net worth of 177 crore. While the second richest CM Pema Khandu has a net worth of Rs 129 crore

Tripura counterpart Manik Sarkar, a man of thrift means who even donates his salary to the party, has never had to face charges of corruption. Even his staunchest opponent has not been able to accuse him of corruption in the 20 years that he has been the Chief Minister.
