This Ahmedabad Girl & Her Friends Donate Excess Food To More Than 600 People At 1 AM Every Night

From our friends at
Feeding India

October 12th, 2017

It’s one at night, everyone in the neighbourhood is warm in their beds and sleeping comfortably when a girl and her friends are walking on the streets wearing bright coloured shirts. All of them with their storage containers and hand gloves, are packing and distributing food.

This is the scenario every night in localities near SG Highway, Shivranjani, Panjrapole, Lakhudi Talavadi, Anjali Cross Roads, Manav Sadhna and many more areas in Ahmedabad. Every day, more than 600 people are fed excess food left in restaurants and caterings.

Shital Sharma seems like a usual 20-year-old girl who is a college student. Her life seems normal during the day doing regular work. But there is something more to Shital than just an average college student. She is a Hunger Hero (volunteer) at Feeding India, a not-for-profit organisation fighting the problem of food waste and hunger in the country.

Shital with her team of hunger heroes from Feeding India are no less than any fictional superhero who comes out in the darkness to help those who are in need. “The smiles which are reflected in the eyes of people when I give them food add value to my life everyday”, said Shittal on asking why she does what she does. Savita, another hunger hero at Feeding India said, “The joy of every single meal served brings us closer to serendipity”.

This World Food Week (9-16 October), with the support of the public, Feeding India wishes to set up food distribution systems in most cities which will enable schools, colleges, companies, weddings, restaurants and individuals to donate excess nutritious food to the people in need. You can also volunteer, join on-ground events and spread awareness.

There is enough food produced in India which can feed the 20 crore hungry citizens of the country. But knowingly or unknowingly, we all waste this food. This is just one example of an inspirational story from one city in India. People from all parts of the society, every citizen and organization are encouraged to come forward and commit their support towards solving food wastage and hunger.

Now it’s time for each of us to step up and TAKE ACTION and step up for the ones who need our help. It doesn’t matter if you’re a student, an employee, a housewife, retired, a college student, a company, a restaurant, a chef, a caterer or anyone else. No matter where you are and what you do, YOU can play a role in solving India’s biggest social problem.
