It is true that real heroes do not require to wear capes. A Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel lost his life while saving 5 people on April 21. Jagbir Singh Rana who has worked for RPF for more than 30 years did not think twice before coming in front of a hurtling train in Delhi, reported Hindustan Times.

What happened?

According to the police, the 50-year-old RPF personnel while patrolling the tracks between Adarsh Nagar and Azadpur railway stations to prevent robberies noticed a couple fighting on the tracks during 9.30 pm. Rana noted that Hoshiarpur Express train was approaching towards the couple and alerted them. He pushed both of them out of the tracks. He saved the couple. Meanwhile, he noticed that on the other track, three children from the neighbourhood who had come to dispose of garbage were staring at the couple. Rana spotted a Satabadi Express hurtling at him and the kids. He alerted the kids, who stepped out of the track at the right time. Although Rana jumped from the tracks but he got hit by the train.

One of the witnesses, Kishan Shah who lives in a hutment said that Rana was thrown 15 meters away from the point of collision. Another resident Mohammad Naeem said that Rana first saved the couple and then rushed towards children.

Police Reaction

Dinesh Kumar Gupta, the Deputy Commissioner of police, said that the inquiry has revealed that Rana lost his life after being hit by Kalka Shatabdi while trying to save a woman and children. He further said that an autopsy would be conducted and his family members were informed. RN Singh, divisional railway manager, said that a wreath-laying ceremony was arranged for Rana. He further mentioned that during his service he had won meritorious service awards twice in 2008 and 2009.

Family members proud

Rohit Kumar, the eldest son of Rana, said that the family was grieving the loss, but they were proud of Rana. He mentioned that we are happy that he sacrificed his life while saving others in the line of duty. He further praised Rana by saying that he was sincere about his duty. Rajbir Singh, elder brother of Jagbir Singh, is worried about the source of income, as Jagbir was the sole earning member and his two sons were still studying. In a noble act, the family on April 24 donated his eyes before carrying the body to his village in Sonepat, for his last rites.

The Logical Indian pays homage to Rana for saving the lives of 5 people and for his selfless work towards his duty.
