Commendable: MP Police Save 402 Abandoned Infants Between 2016 And 2018

For the lot of abandoned infants in Madhya Pradesh, the personnel of ‘Dial-100’, an emergency response service, have been acting as saviours in the literal sense of the term.

The MP Police officers have not only been rescuing abandoned infants, but they have been providing these children with a new lease of life. Besides keeping a track of law and order in the state, police officers have also rescued 402 abandoned infants between 2016 and 2018.


Dial-100 Service

The Madhya Pradesh Government in 2015 had launched its Dial-100 service, which is a state-wide initiative aimed at helping people in distress. Cops posted under the Dial-100 service respond to distress calls from all over the state.

Additional Director General (ADG), Police Telecom, Upendra Jain while talking to The Logical Indian informed that there are 291 different types of complaints and rescuing abandoned children is one of them. He further stated that the number gets around 25,000 distress calls per day, out of which about 6,000 are actionable.

The Dial-100 service also has a fleet of 1000 first response vehicle (FRV) which help facilitate the process even better. The children after being rescued are immediately put into the care of hospitals since they require adequate medical attention.

Jain also said that the age and condition of the children vary from one case to another, however, he mentioned that most of the abandoned infants are only a few days old.

Stating the fact that the service is fairly new, he said that people’s response to it has been overwhelming to the point that the number of such child abandonment cases being reported by people are increasing.

Most of these children are then adopted by couples from the hospitals where they are sent for treatment. Refusing to comment on the issue of gender in such cases, Jain stated that they do not record data gender-wise.

This has been a joint effort of both, the police personnel and those informed citizens who have been making distress calls. The Logical Indian commends the MP Police’s efforts in rescuing these abandoned children.

In a country like India where child abandonment issue is almost an everyday occurrence, we need more initiatives like these.
