Meet The MP And MLAs From Kerala, Delhi Who Send Their Children To Govt Schools

Kerala – A revolution in education
Two years back, the students’ enrollment in government schools of Kerala was seeing a downslide. Recognising the dwindling numbers, the state government sprung into action. 49 government schools in each assembly constituency were found out to turn them into state-of-the-art schools. Rs 5 crore was sanctioned to each school for complete revamp of the infrastructure, facilities and quality of education being imparted. More than 40,000 hi-tech classrooms with laptops, projectors and internet were then set up, as reported by NDTV.
The quality of the government schools is said to have improved to such an extent that even politicians and bureaucrats are now sending their children to these schools. The overall enrollment in classes 1-9 has increased from 1.45 lakh in 2017-18 to 1.96 lakh in 2018-19. This is the first time since 1991 that the enrollment in government schools has risen by 6.3% and that in private and unaided schools have actually dropped by 8% in Kerala.
C Raveendranath, the Education Minister of Kerala told NDTV, “We had asked bureaucrats, MPs and MLAs to send their wards to government schools and some of them actually paid heed to it.”
Last month itself, two CPM MLA TV Rajesh and CPM MP MB Rajesh admitted their children in government schools. The trend seems to have transcended party lines as well, since, Congress MLA TV Balaram too enrolled his son in the government school close to his house.
All of the three leaders took to social media to announce their decision.
While speaking to NDTV, Congress MLA TV Balaram said, “I am sending my children to government, not merely to send a message, but because of conviction and confidence upon the standards of education at the government schools. I believe that government schools are far better than many of the unaided English schools around.”
“It is a duty of people like me as representative of people to send a message by sending our own children to govt schools”, MB Rajesh said.
Delhi follows Kerala
Delhi government schools have seen improvement in terms of quality of education, infrastructure and even resources in the last few years. In fact, two of the AAP MLAs have enrolled their children in these schools.
MLA Amanatullah, on July 26, enrolled his son and daughter into a government school in Delhi. Not only his children but his nephews and children of some of his friends too have gotten admission into these government schools. These kids were said to be earlier studying in convent schools.
Amanatullah was quoted as saying, “Since the party came to power, it has worked a lot to improve the condition of these schools not only in infrastructure but also in the quality of education. I believe the children will have good education at the school”, The Quint reported.
Another AAP MLA Gulab Singh’s children have been studying in government schools since past one year now.
The Logical Indian Take
This is an extreme refreshing trend. People have always associated government schools with poor infrastructure and disappointing quality of education. The efforts being made to improve the situation with even political leaders setting precedent is truly heartening to see. It is hoped that the government schools in other states are also improved. It is to be noted that parents many a times admit their wards in private schools paying exorbitant fees even if it well exceeds their budget. The Logical Indian hopes that Kerala and Delhi’s model is followed by other states as well.
