102-Year-Old Indian Woman Athlete Clinches Gold In World Masters Athletics Championship

A ubiquitous saying, “Age is just a number” is often quoted. A 102-Year-Old Indian woman athlete from Patiala, Punjab – Mann Kaur has defied the numbers and really proved the adage true by winning a 200 m race in 3 minutes and 14.65 seconds, and thereby clinching the gold medal in World Masters Athletic championship. She was competing in 100-104 category championships – an Olympics-like event for elderlies held in Malaga, Spain, as reported by India Today.

Kaur’s winning is not only inspiring but also breaks the widespread stereotype. As soon as the news spread, the Twitter grew full of tweets expressing wishes and love for Kaur. Reportedly, Milind Soman, a Fitness Model and founder of Pinkathon, was one of the early wishers, who tweeted the news.



Son pushes Mann Kaur to pursue the passion

Kaur’s son, Guru Dev, a 78-year-old athlete, who also participated in world master athletic championships, motivates her to keep running till her health supports her passion, she shared in an interview to the History TV18 channel. The mother-son duo has been training at the Punjab University, Patiala. Kaur said, “I began racing for 100m in the beginning but then I went to the race.”

According to The Indian Express, Man Kaur, India’s oldest woman athlete began her athletics career at the age of 93. In today’s era, due to the growing unhealthy lifestyle ailments, one can hardly dream of achieving such a feat. Speaking to History Channel, she said, “No problem is great if you have faith in God. The important thing is doing the thing which brings you joy, I get that joy in running.”

Last year in April, Mann Kaur had also won a 100m race in World Masters Championship held in Auckland, New Zealand.

According to India Today, in 2016, Kaur became the fastest centenarian by completing the race first in 1 min and 14 secs at American Masters Game, held in Vancouver, Canada. Reportedly, She had also danced for expressing her joy for victory. She has won more than 20 medals in many other championships like World Masters Game and American masters.
