Volunteers in Madhya Pradesh planted more than 66 million (6 crore) trees in a record-breaking environmental drive of 12 hours (7 am to 7 pm) on Sunday, reported The Independent.

The plantation campaign, organised by the state government, saw the participation of about 1.5 million people, who planted more than 20 different species of saplings along the Narmada River throughout Sunday. Twenty-four districts of the Narmada river basin were chosen as planting sites to increase the chances of saplings’ survival.

Last year, volunteers across Uttar Pradesh had set the world record of planting more than 50 million trees in one day.

The drive in Madhya Pradesh, monitored by Guinness World Records, might break the UP’s record. The result is expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan described the efforts as a “historic day” and said that the campaign was a part of the Narmada Seva Mission and step toward declining global warming.

India is a committed member of the Paris Climate Agreement and aims to increase its forest cover by 5 million hectares before 2030 to combat climate change.

The Logical Indian community appreciates the efforts of the Madhya Pradesh government and citizens to take a positive step toward sustainability. Global warming and climate change are issues that cannot be lightly and joint efforts of every person count in this regard. We hope that the MP campaign is taken as an example by other states and more trees are planted in the country.
