In November, a picture of a Kashmiri father mourning death of his martyred son, an Indian army soldier was widely shared. The father was seen being consoled by another army man. The image was enough to arouse emotions among the countrymen and gives a glimpse of the pain a soldier and his or her family has to endure.

The soldier in question was Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani who will now be receiving India’s highest peacetime gallantry medal, the Ashok Chakra (posthumously). He was martyred during an anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district.

Lance Naik Ahmad Wani, a resident of Kulgam, was earlier an ‘Ikhwan’, which means that he was a militant who surrendered and then became involved in the counter-insurgency operations. He was attached with the 34 Rashtriya Rifles, as reported by The Indian Express. He has been the recipient of the Sena medal twice.

On November 23, Wani and his team received an intelligence message about six heavily armed Hizbul and Lashkar militants at Batagund village. Wani and his team were entrusted with the task of blocking the escape route of the terrorist. A press release issued from the President’s Secretariat said, “Sensing danger, the terrorists attempted breaching the inner cordon, firing indiscriminately and lobbing grenades. Undeterred by the situation, Wani held ground and eliminated one terrorist in a fierce exchange at close range.”

Wani then moved to a house where another terrorist was in hiding. When this terrorist tried to escape, Wani indulged in a hand to hand fight and neutralised him. Wani was successful in killing the terrorist, despite suffering from injuries himself. Unfortunately, Wani succumbed to the injuries he had retained. At his funeral, Wani was honoured with a 21-gun salute. Several villagers also turned up to pay their last respects to him.
