From nursery to high school, parents don’t hesitate to stand in queue and pay hefty fees to get their child admitted in swanky schools. But for Suman D Pannekar, education is all that matters. The Superintendent of Police from Kodagu district has set an example by enrolling her kid in a local government-run Anganwadi in Madikeri.

The 2013 batch IPS officer, took charge of the district in May last year. She is happy with her decision and says her two-year-old daughter, Khushi is happy to go to Anganwadi every day. “She is relaxed and enjoying her time there,” she told Times of India.

Khushi plays with her friends, attends classes and has midday meal along with other children. The IPS officer drops and picks the child herself. Suman feels that such institutions serve as the right place for a child to learn moral values in their daily schedule, which will eventually help them throughout their life.

Suman hails from Beedi village in Belgavi district. She is also a certified Ayurvedic doctor. She always wanted her children to study in a government school such ideologies might be seen to crop out from her humble beginnings until now.

“Private educational institutions are result-oriented, and they put pressure on children, I wanted her to start her education in a relaxed atmosphere. I found Anganwadi the best place for her,” the police officer said. Along with her daughter, there are kids of a few other police personnel kids who study there, she told.

Such decisions are pretty rare, as soon as netizens heard about it, she went viral on the social media platforms. The strength of the centre is about 17 students, among which seven are girls. Savitha, an Anganwadi supervisor, said the centre is one of the best in town and is at par with privately run institutions in terms of infrastructure and education.
