Girl Donates Savings & Gold Earrings

CM Pinarayi Vijayan was attending the 90th birth anniversary of CPI(M) veteran MM Lawrence. 8-year-old Liyana Thejus waited for him outside the venue. As soon as she saw him, she ran towards him and donated her savings to the CM, to be utilised towards the flood relief operation (CMDRF).

She then went a step ahead and took off her gold earrings and donated it as well.

An impressed CM Vijayan took to Facebook to describe the incident.

“She handed over her piggy band savings to me. When I was about to leave, she said ‘this too’ and removed the earrings that she wore and gave it to me,” he wrote.

Thejus is the daughter of film production controller Thankachan and nurse Sine Mol. She is presently studying in class four at St. Francis High School in Aluva.

Flood-Ravaged Kerala

Heavy floods ravaged the states of Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, among others in August. Kerala was one of the worst affected states. Over 120 people reportedly died and at least 36 people have gone missing.

The state government declared 1,038 villages of 13 districts as ‘flood/landship affected’.

In 2018, the state was hit by similar devastating floods. Close to 500 people were killed and an estimated 150 people went missing. The state incurred a loss of Rs 400 billion. The government declared it as a Level 3 Calamity or ‘calamity of a severe’ nature.

The Logical Indian Take

A little girl like Thejus is a beacon of hope for humanity in these testing times. If every countryman emulates her compassion and gives back to society, it would be a matter of time for a disaster-hit region to get back on its feet.
