“And as he fell from the sky onto the ground,

With broken bones; all but a black box was found.

His ejection was safe but parachute caught fire,

Shattered the family and all that he desired

Never had he breathed so heavy, as for the last time,

While the bureaucracy enjoyed its corrupt cheese and wine.

We give our warriors outdated machines to fight,

They still deliver it with all their prowess and might.

Once again a martyr was killed,

As he fell from the sky onto the ground.

Unforgiving is a job of a test pilot

Someone has to risk it to show others the light

Proud of my brother

Fights on always my BATMAN !! जय हिंद”

This is a small poem which Sushant Abrol, brother of Indian Air Force pilot Sqn Ldr Samir Abrol penned down after his brother died in a test sortie. Same poem saying “proud of my husband was then posted by Samir Abrol’s wife Garima Abrol. Sqn Ldr Samir Abrol and Sqn Ldr Siddartha Negi were testing the Mirage 2000 aircraft which was newly upgraded by state-owned PSU Hindustan Aeronautical Limited (HAL). Both the test pilots were attached with the Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment.

And as he fell from the sky onto the ground,With broken bones ; all but a black box was found. His ejection was safe…

Families of both pilots are understandably devastated. As per reports, both the pilots ejected, however, Sqn Ldr Negi landed in the wreckage, while Sqn Ldr Abrol sustained major injuries and later succumbed to it.

What happened

On February 1, upgraded Mirage 2000 trainer aircraft was tested by the two young Air Force officers. Soon after takeoff, the plane crashed. Both the pilots are said to be best in the trade, having undergone extensive training as test pilots. Negi hailed from Dehradun, Uttarakhand and was commissioned in the force on June 27, 2009, while Abrol was from Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad and was commissioned on June 21, 2008.

The flight data recorder (FDR) or the black box was recovered soon after the crash, which has now sent for investigation. HAL released a statement, expressing sadness over the death of two young pilots. “HAL regrets to inform that one upgraded Mirage 2000 aircraft crashed during the customer acceptance flight at HAL airport here today around 10.30 am resulting in loss of lives of two pilots Sqn Ldr Sameer Abrol and Sqn Ldr Siddartha Negi,’’ HAL had said in a statement after the incident. However, critics and the general public alike mounted a sharp attack on HAL, questioning their ability and for allegedly delivering faulty jet to the IAF. In its defence, a HAL test pilot, claiming to be a senior retired IAF officer himself, told NDTV, “Before an aircraft goes to the IAF, its standards are good enough for me to bet my life on it.” Adding that the Air Force’s loss was his loss as well.

The Logical Indian Take

Since the initial investigations are still underway, coming to any conclusion would mean jumping the gun. However, one needs to understand that the death of these two young officers is a matter of a great loss to the nation. Many people who have known and worked with the two swear by their expertise and passion to serve their nation. It is a wake call for us as public and also for the government to value soldiers not only such tragedy strikes. The Logical Indian expresses its solidarity with the family and friends of the two officers.
