Story Update [7.10.2017] : After a police investigation it has been found out that the 17-yr Dalit youth staged the attack to garner publicity. The Hindustan Times report, says The 17-year-old victim had alleged he was attacked with a blade in Limbodara village on October 3 for sporting a moustache. But Gandhinagar Police said a forensic team found no blade at the spot and investigators couldn’t trace any attackers or their vehicles. The owner of a local pan shop also told police he saw no such crime. Police then questioned the 17-year-old, who confessed to having inflicted the blade wound on himself with two other minor school friends. “I was not attacked by anybody. I inflicted the injury myself with the help of friends just like that,” the minor told Hindustan Times but added that two earlier reports of attacks on Dalit men for sporting moustache– including one on his own cousin – were true. The boy also denied any pressure or threat.

Original Story [4.10.2017] : Two Dalit men were allegedly thrashed in two separate incidents by members of the Rajput community for “sporting a moustache” at Limbodara village in Kalol taluka of Gandhinagar district, Gujarat.

The victims were Krunal Maheria (30), a law student and Piyush Parmar (24). Meheria was beaten up by one Bharatsinh Vaghela and some others who said that he cannot become a Rajput just by sporting a moustache. Parmar was allegedly beaten up for the same reason while returning home after a garba program.

In another incident, a 21-year-old Dalit man was lynched to death by members of the upper-caste Patel community for attending a garba event in Gujarat’s Anand district.

As a sign of protest against anti-Dalit violence, men took to social media to post selfies, showing off their moustaches. They used hashtags such as #RightToMoustache and came out in support of the ones assaulted.

“It is our way of telling people that Dalits will sport a moustache and twirl it like a king without a care in the world. We are sure that more people will join us and change their Facebook and WhatsApp display pictures in the coming days,” Dalit activist Subodh Parmar said, reported The Indian Express.

The Logical Indian community commends all those who came out in support of the Dalit community which faces rampant discrimination at different levels across the country. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reports a 44% increase in violence against Dalits, up from 32,712 in 2010 to 47,064 crimes in 2014. These incidents are directed towards reminding Dalits about their status in the caste-based social structure, and ensuring that they remain there. The men who posted pictures of themselves with moustaches as a sign of protest against anti-Dalit violence prove that to live in a progressive world, our thoughts and actions need to be progressive as well.
