On December 17, a major fire engulfed Mumbai’s Employees State Insurance Corporation(ESIC) Hospital in Andheri(East). The tragedy that took away lives of eight people – including a two-month-old baby left many in the state of horror. At the time when the fire was engulfing the hospital building, some good Samaritans became saviours and rescued the people from the hospital.
“It was good that some people without thinking about their life came to help others. If those people would not have come at the right time then the death casualties would have been more,” said Vishal Nayak, an employee of the hospital, who was at the site at the time of the incident, while talking to The Logical Indian.
One such braveheart, who stepped inside the building to save people is a young food delivery boy. The 20-year-old Swiggy delivery boy, Sidhu Humanabade, might have started his normal day hoping to finish his delivery target of the day. However, when he reached one of the delivery spots in Marol, Andheri (East) area, he saw smoke rising from the hospital building. The tenth pass out, Sidhu, soon joined the rescue operations.
“I kept a ladder on the third-floor window ledge for an elderly woman, to climb down but the ledge collapsed as soon as she got on to the ladder. I could do nothing as she plunged down,” said Sidhu while talking to The Times of India.
Sindhu managed to save the life of at least ten people. However, he regretted that even after his efforts there were a few, he could not save. While narrating the incident, he said, “Unfortunately, two patients fell down even as I helped them.”
According to the eyewitnesses, the main gate of the hospital was covered with smoke. People who were inside the hospital had problems leaving the premises. But, Sidhu did not care much, as soon as he heard the screams of the people, he just ran inside the hospital to save them.
Talking about the incident he said that people have to help others in distress, there is no question of being frightened to help out. Sidhu who scaled five storeys along with firefighters to rescue people used fire brigade’s ladder to climb the building. He then with the help of stones broke the glass facade to reach the people.
For three hours, Sidhu along with other firemen helped in rescue operations. After being at the hospital site, Sidhu later complained about chest pain.
“I had tried to wear a handkerchief on my face but it was lost,” said Sidhu.
Sidhu was later taken to the hospital and the doctors who attended him said that he would be fine. Sidhu’s efforts and the heroic act was lauded by many.
