It is true when people say that “Honesty is the best policy”. An auto driver from Mumbai returned a passenger’s bag with Rs 80,000 cash in it that she forgot in his vehicle and earned a free quality education for his children. Amit Gupta could have never imagined that his little deed of honesty could make such a huge difference in the lives of his children.

How did he end up being so lucky?

Sarla Namboodri (68) runs Arunodaya English School in Chembur, Mumbai which provides education to primary and pre-primary kids.

As per her everyday routine, she would always park her car a little away from the school, and it was this one day that he took Amit’s auto to reach her car.

“I drive down to the school but I park my car a little away. As I have some difficulty in walking, after school, I take an auto till car park around 3 pm,” she said.

On the fateful day of December 21, two months ago, she took Amit’s auto to reach her car where she forgot to take her bag before getting off. The bag had Rs. 80,000 cash from students as fees, credit and debit cards, Aadhaar card, driving license, PAN card, car registration documents, two cell phones, house keys and locker keys.

“After reaching my car, I realised that I had left my bag in the auto and I panicked,” said Namboodiri.

Panicking, Namboodiri drove to the school and immediately sent the peon to look for the auto.

Reportedly, Namboodiri said, “I live alone and the school was to stay shut the next day. For a minute, I did not know what to do. I drove to the school and asked the peon to look for the auto. One of the peons went up to the main road and approached a paan vendor, who said that the auto driver had made a stop at his shop and that his name was Amit Gupta.”

After they failed to get any hint of the auto driver, there only last hope was to approach police and lodge a complaint. However, fortunately, Amit turned up after an hour and returned the bag, saying that another passenger spotted the bag.

“After he left, it struck me that I hadn’t taken his contact details and I wanted to do something for him. I approached the paan vendor, but the phone number he gave me was wrong,” said Namboodiri, who was later grounded for a few weeks due to ill health.

However, despite poor health, she continued her hunt for the driver. She finally found him last week.

After getting to know about Amit’s financial condition and the fact that he cannot afford to send his kids to school, she offered his kids free education.

She mentioned, “I found out that he wasn’t doing well financially. I learnt that he had two kids but couldn’t afford to send them to school. Being a former teacher and with my experience in the education sector, I decided to provide his children free education.”

Gupta was not only felicitated but also awarded Rs 10,000. “Had Gupta not brought my bag back, I would have had to face a lot of trouble,” she said.

The Logical Indian appreciates the honesty, humanity, generosity and kindness that Amit and Sarla Namboodri has showcased. We sincerely hope that there are more people like them in the world.
