A woman in Chennai rescued a newborn baby from a drain in SVS Nagar, Valsaravakkam, when she heard his frail cries. The baby is now in the hospital, under observation.

“Woke up to wails of the baby”

45-year-old Geetha on August 15, our independence day, woke up to what sounded like wails of a crying baby. She was alerted about the same by her milk vendor. To her surprise, she realised that the sound was in fact of a crying baby coming from a drain near her daughter’s house where she was visiting. Wasting no further time, she pulled the baby out from the drain, as bystanders looked on.

She said, “I reacted immediately; it was spontaneous. As a dozen or so residents and bystanders looked on, I peeped through the drain – an iron pipe around 1 ft in diameter – and saw the child inside,” as reported by The Times of India. She then put her hands into the drain and pulled out the baby. The umbilical cord had wrapped around the baby’s neck, constricting his breathing.

She then gently bathed the baby and rushed to hospital as the baby seemed to have a difficulty in breathing.

She rushed the baby to Egmore hospital. Reportedly, the baby was placed in an incubator. Shortly after getting the news, state health minister C Vijayabaskar arrived at the spot and asked the attending doctors to pay special attention to the baby’s health. Post-treatment, it is reported that the baby will be handed over to an orphanage through child helpline officials.

Also, as reported by The News Minute, no case has been filed yet. An official from Valasaravakkam Police Station said, “No case has been filed. The child has been handed over and is receiving treatment at the Government Hospital For Women and Children in Egmore. The baby is doing fine. We will decide upon further action accordingly.”

Baby has been named “Sugandhiram”

Meanwhile, Geetha has named the baby “Sugandhiram” which means freedom. She told The News Minute, “I named him Sugandhiram because I found him on Independence Day. From today, he is Sugandhiram(freedom in Tamil). He can grow up freely.” She even added that given a chance she would be happy to raise the baby. Geetha, who is a homemaker and a former actress, was at her daughter’s house when the incident happened.

The Logical Indian appreciates Geetha for her presence of mind and quick action. What makes her deed even more commendable is the fact that she is even ready to raise the child herself. We wish more people like Geetha choose to act in times of crisis instead of merely being bystanders.
