On Friday, August 31, people belonging to the Muslim community witnessed a different experience during their regular Friday prayer at the Juma Masjid located in Vachoor of Kerala’s Kottayam district. During a sermon that is bound to stand out, Father Sanu Puthussery, a priest at St. Antony’s Church, delivered a thanksgiving speech to the Muslim community, for their selfless service in helping the flood victims who sought refuge at his Church during the Kerala floods reported NDTV.

Muslim community came forward to help refugees stranded at Church

According to the Times of India, during the Kerala floods around 580 people took shelter at St. Antony’s Church at Achinakom. Though the church had provided the refugees with everything they had, they fell short of food and water for the following day. Father Puthussery went to the Masjid to seek help from the Maulavi (Muslim cleric) and the Muslim community.

In his speech, Father Puthussery said, “I straightaway went to the Masjid, apprised the Maulavi about our difficulty and requested his help. After the day’s prayers, Muslim brothers came to the church with a large quantity of food and water as per his direction.”

While addressing the devotees at the mosque, the priest said that he cannot express the gratitude in words for the much-needed help the Muslim community extended when there was no other way to exit from difficult times. Apart from food and water supplies, essential medicines were also brought by the members of the Muslim community.

Reportedly, in his nearly 10-minute-long speech at the Masjid, the priest while addressing the Muslim brothers, “Pope Francis has said build bridges, not walls. The devastating flood has now given us an opportunity to destroy the walls and build the bridges of togetherness”. The Mosque authorities have showcased an act of togetherness by giving the priest same platform which was of Maulavi’s to address the believers during prayers. The priest added that he had gone to the Masjid to thank the authorities personally, but they had then invited him to the prayer hall and was given a platform to speak.  It was definitely a unique experience for the 250 Mosque goers, who were present at the Masjid on that day.

The Logical Indian take

Kerala floods were the deadliest the state has ever witnessed in past few decades, but even in this worst situation humanity outshines. The passion shown by the people to help their fellow beings during dreadful times set an example for humanity. The people of Kerala have set a precedent that there is unity in diversity, together they stand to help their state and their people out of its plight.
