A Sikh police inspector saved a Muslim boy from the clutches of an angry mob on May 24 in Uttarakhand’s Ramnagar, as the mob became furious after allegedly finding the boy with a Hindu girl.
As reported by The Lallantop, the boy and the girl met in a temple in Girija village. The spot was a sparsely populated spot but the violent mob caught up with them. The now viral video shows Sub-Inspector Gagandeep Singh coming to the rescue of the boy, fearing he would be lynched by the agitated mob.
Gagandeep can be seen confronting the mob alone, while they keep on their incoherent shouting. Another policeman can be seen trying to control the crowd. When the police refused to hand the boy over to the mob, they started chanting anti-police slogans. Then they locked the door so that Gagandeep cannot leave with the boy. All this happened while they continuously tried to hit the boy and Gagandeep kept on shielding the blows.
My brother Gagandeep Singh yesterday saved a life of one muslim guy in crowd who wanted him to handover that guy to them…
Beaten up before police arrived
The Lallantop, quoting witnesses, reported that the boy was sitting on the floor after being thrashed and the girl was arguing with them before the police arrived.
When the girl asked a man why he had beaten up the boy, the man allegedly responded: “We will chop him to pieces. You are a Hindu and roaming around with a Muslim man. I will chop you too.”
Police said that the mob comprised of members of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal. The group had allegedly roughed up the boy and one of his friends by the time police arrived at the scene. The group also alleged that the couple was “getting intimate,” but the police didn’t say anything regarding this.
The Logical Indian appreciates Sub-Inspector Gagandeep for braving the violent mob and protecting the boy from getting lynched. In the wake of such incidents of mob justice, we need conscious policemen like him who would not be afraid to do their job when faced with a mob.
We need stringent punishments against those who resort to such acts of violence. We also need a new law that would punish people who resort to moral policing. These VHP and Bajrang Dal activists consider themselves above the law and decide who can be in a relationship with whom. They even abused the girl and threatened to chop her off for being with a Muslim boy.
