Bihar's Unique Wedding: From Groom Arriving In E-Rickshaw Driven By Sister To Lessons On Climate Change

Indian weddings are famous for their exorbitant nature. The guest list includes family, friends and their friends and so on, basically, it is an invitation for a huge gathering. Making use of this, a Bihar couple, spreading awareness about several issues like women empowerment and environmental awareness made their wedding unique.

A new way of marriage

The couple Ruchi and Shravan Kumar tied the knot in Bihar’s Darbhanga district in a different style. Firstly, the Baarat procession – a custom which is a huge affair in Indian weddings, was different at this one. In most weddings, the groom comes riding on a horse or in swanky cars, but Shravan decided to come by an e-rickshaw to promote the idea of using public transport as it also helps in minimising air pollution, reports Bihar Tak.

Another eye-catching thing in their Baarat was that the e-rickshaw was driven by his sister. Dressed in red saree his sister drove the rickshaw to lay emphasis on women empowerment. The idea was to show the women of modern India as working and self- sustaining individuals.

The wedding ceremony also saw the planting of saplings. Both Ruchi and Shravan planted several saplings during their wedding; they also distributed saplings to each of their guests as a return gift. The couple’s motive behind this move was to encourage more people to plant trees to make our surroundings a better place to live in.

Environment enthusiast Shravan and his wife also avoided the use of plastic in their wedding. They claimed that no plastic cutleries were used at their wedding.

While talking about what made the couple do this, Sharav told the media, “This idea to make my wedding more environment-friendly came from members of my club – Junior Scientist Club – that I, along with my friends had started some 10-years-ago.” He further said that the club has always focused on the problems related to global warming which is not just country-specific but also a global phenomenon.

Unique invite

A copy of Bhagwat Gita and betel nut accompanied the couple wedding invitation card. “For my wedding, I have atleast distributed 400 Bhagwat Geeta, if even ten people will read it then there will be a chain reaction,” he added, who is extremely inspired by its text.

The bride also did not stay behind in encouraging people to opt for a simple wedding. Ruchi told the media, “The culture of the expensive wedding should stop. People should go for a wedding in the temple, or court marriages, then only this culture of big weddings will change.”

Appreciated by all

The two also donated all the money that they received as their wedding gift to a government school to construct a smart classroom.

Other than flowers and lights the wedding venue was also decorated with several posters with environment awareness messages. One of their guest who was present at the wedding said that he has seen a lot of weddings in his life, but this wedding was unique in its own kind. The Logical Indian appreciates the couple and hopes that more people follow suit.
