In these times when we are surrounded by cynicism and most of us do not even care as to what is going on with our next-door neighbour, we are pleasantly surprised when we come across people who have dedicated their lives to making the society a better place to live in.

Tarksangat brings to us the story of a retired army man, Bhagguram Maurya, who donated his Provident Fund for construction of roads in his village which happens to fall in the Lok Sabha constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Located around 20 kms away from Varanasi, the Hirampur basti of Rameshwar village in Jhansa district has been in the news for the work that the ex-army man has done.

Maurya retired as a captain and the four lakhs that he received as Provident Fund, he donated the entire amount to the construction of a 1 km long road in his village.

What prompted him do this?

Maurya was returning to his home when he faced a lot of difficulties while he was travelling on an ill-maintained road. It was challenging to ride a bicycle on that road.

Maurya decided that it was high time he did something worthwhile for his village. He put his entire money of the Provident Fund to build a good road – now, not just bikes but also four-wheelers and tractors can travel on this road.

It took seven long months and a lot of effort, but Maurya was eventually successful in making a good quality road a reality for his villagers.

Before this, Rameshwar village had no good connecting road. As a result, they had to face a lot of problems – the ill and the injured could not reach the nearest city to the get necessary medical attention.

The construction of the road changed their lives.

Bhagguram Maurya has been awarded Presidential medal twice by APJ Abdul Kalam and Pranab Mukherjee for commendable service. He has also been awarded several other awards besides these.

It is needless to say how much importance Provident Fund bears for anyone who is retiring from the job. However, it is appreciable how Maurya put the society, his village at the forefront and decided on building a road for them.

The Logical Indian appreciates the work that Maurya has carried out in his village. We hope he inspires many more to take up such humanitarian tasks that would help in making the society a better place.

However, the one persisting question is why would a common man need to take such humongous responsibilities on himself – is it not the responsibility of the government to provide these basic amenities?
