An NRI With Other Enthusiasts Has Adopted A Village With The Motive Of Providing Better Education & Infrastructure

Mahatma Gandhi once said that the “Future of India lies in its villages.” That holds true even today with more than 70% of the country still residing in the villages, according to the 2011 census of India.

Sadly, most of the villages are underdeveloped and lack proper facilities. In a situation like this, when people go out of their bound to cater to the neglected villages then it deserves an applause. Such is the story of a group called Our Village Our Responsibility.

Our Village Our Responsibility

They are a team of passionate people hoping to make things better. Headed by Kavitha K Pandian, they have adopted a village. They say “The progress and development should start from our villages which are the backbone of our existence.”

Kottaiyur Village in Virudhunagar District, Tamil Nadu was adopted by Kavitha and her team. Kavitha secured the approval from Block Development Officer & a copy was sent to District Collector, Virudhunagar to adopt Kottaiyur village.

Development activities

In a village with a strength of almost 5,000 people, development does not only confine to providing electricity and education. It requires time, patience and a lot of effort. They undertook a lot of projects, sometimes spending from their own pockets and sometimes with the help of the crowd.

In the last 2.5 years that they have been working for, they have planted 55 trees out of which 30 have survived. They have undertaken desilting of ponds and also have taken care of saltwater desalination wells. This project was funded by the village youth.

They have desilted two canals. The entire cost of doing so was Rs. 2,49,110 and was funded by AIMS India NGO & NAMCO NGO.

Knowing the importance of English and basic knowledge of computers in today’s society, they began online classes for the two subjects, via Skype. This initiative has been welcomed by six schools in the village.

They have also donated Smart Class equipment & funds for repairing classrooms along with painting done in three government schools in Thailapuram, Ariyalur & Vanaveretty Govt Schools.

Kavitha herself has donated more than 2 lakhs for the all-round development of Thailapuram Government Higher secondary school. With the money, they have installed Smartboard, Projector, Mount Kit, Keyboard, Mouse, Speaker, PC, UPS. Not just that the school has been renovated with new tiles.

Smart classes

Many other schools have been upgraded in the same manner with smart classrooms. From teachers to students everyone has appreciated the move. Toilets for girls and lady teachers have also been built at many schools.

The Logical Indian applauds the initiative taken by Our Village Our Responsibility and hopes that many other people undertake the same responsibility.
